Divorce hurts health more at earlier ages

Monday, January 30, 2012

Divorce at a younger age hurts people's health more than divorce later in life, according to a new study by a Michigan State University sociologist.

Hui Liu said the findings, which appear in the research journal Social Science & Medicine, suggest older people have more coping skills to deal with the stress of divorce.

"It's clear to me that we need more social and family support for the younger divorced groups," said Liu, assistant professor of sociology. "This could include divorce counseling to help people handle the stress, or offering marital therapy or prevention programs to maintain marital satisfaction."

Liu analyzed the self-reported health of 1,282 participants in Americans' Changing Lives, a long-term national survey. She measured the gap in health status between those who remained married during the 15-year study period and those who transitioned from marriage to divorce, at certain ages and among different birth cohorts, or generations.

Liu found the gap was wider at younger ages. For example, among people born in the 1950s, those who got divorced between the ages of 35 and 41 reported more health problems in relation to their continuously married counterparts than those who got divorced in the 44 to 50 age range.

From a generational perspective, the negative health impact was stronger for baby boomers than it was for older generations ? a finding that surprised Liu.

"I would have expected divorce to carry less stress for the younger generation, since divorce is more prevalent for them," she said.

Liu said this may be because the pressure to marry and stay married was stronger for older generations, and so those who did divorce may have been among the most unhappily married ? and thus felt a certain degree of relief when they did divorce.

Overall, the study found that those who transition from marriage to divorce experience a more rapid health decline than those who remain married. However, those who remained divorced during the entire study period showed no difference than those who remained married.

"This suggests it is not the status of being married or divorced, per se, that affects health, but instead is the process of transitioning from marriage to divorce that is stressful and hurts health," Liu said.

Tablet Shipments To Reach 383.3 Million By 2017, 46% In Emerging Markets

tablet-emergingPost-PC era? Here we come: According to new data from NPD, tablet PC shipments are expected to grow from 72.7 million units in 2011 to 383.3 million units by 2017. For comparison purposes, worldwide PC shipments for 2011 were 352.8 million, after seeing a 6% decline in Q4. While those numbers are remarkable enough on their own, what's really interesting is where much of the growth will come from: the emerging market.

Santorum heads west (Politico)

MIAMI, Fla. ? While his rivals will be here for Tuesday?s primary, Rick Santorum is heading west.

Trailing far behind Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich in the polls here, Santorum won?t even be in Florida on primary day as he doesn?t want to waste time in a state he seems to know he cannot win.

Even if he finishes in the back of the pack in Florida, Santorum says he will continue to run, hitting Nevada, Missouri, Colorado, and maybe Arizona ? cheaper states where delegates are claimed proportionally. And then he says he will go on to super Tuesday on March 6.

?This race is changing every few weeks,? Santorum says in his stump speech. ?It?s going to change again. And what we need to do is to be out there sounding a very strong, consistent message, compete in every state, and that?s what we?re doing.?

?You keep out there, you keep your name out, and lots of things can happen between now and August and we?re going to be in a position to take advantage of that,? he says.

Santorum?s schedule is in flux after his young daughter was hospitalized Saturday night in Philadelphia, and he canceled a Florida campaign appearance scheduled for Sunday morning. But he?s likely to be back in Florida before Tuesday.

After winning the Iowa caucuses, Santorum?s decision to spend time in New Hampshire instead of heading straight to South Carolina, where voters were considered more receptive to his message, puzzled many. But his advisers say there?s a method to such madness. Without the kind of money of some of his competitors, he can still gain earned media in the early primary states and turn in strong debate performances. If he wins delegates in the caucus states and stays focused on his message, eventually Santorum ? not Gingrich ? will prove the stronger alternative to Romney, his advisers hope.

John Brabender, Santorum?s chief strategist, explained the campaign wants a ?clear shot at Romney.?

?That?s ultimately what we?re looking for,? Brabender said.

Brabender said it would have been disastrous to not play in Florida, even if it seemed obvious they couldn?t win the important state. The media would have written Santorum off as unable to run or win a national campaign.

The campaign initially planned to buy advertising time here, but decided to reroute the cash to Nevada instead. Santorum?s first commercial aired in Nevada during Thursday night?s debate.

?If we would have bet the ranch on Florida?and hadn?t won, then we wouldn?t have had very many options,? Brabender said. ?We wanted to be [in Florida] so we were in the dialogue. Instead of targeting by voters, we wanted to target by how much press we could get.?

The Complexities of Investing in Real Estate

Article Directory :: Finance & Investment Articles

A financial services course can cover subject matters anywhere from fixed annuities to interest rates to home mortgages. Any type of investment requires detailed knowledge and planning partnered with monitoring. For many people, home ownership is the single largest investment that they will ever make. Whether it is a single family home, a multi-family home, a commercial property or vacant land, real estate investment is one of the most important parts of your financial portfolio. Owning a real estate property is usually held as part of a larger portfolio, and is generally considered an alternative investment class. However, it provides diversification value, yield enhancement, and the ability to influence performance.

The real estate market can be tricky and unpredictable, but if you enter it at the right time, it can prove to be a smart investment. An investment management specialist will help guide you through your real estate choices. Three key indicators as to whether or not a real estate market has started to rebound are: local unemployment rates, rents, and foreclosures. These indicators can easily be overlooked. It used to be that the three biggest determinants of a property's value were location, location and location; in a slow economy, however, it could be jobs, jobs and jobs.

A financial services course will inform investors on the latest updates in the real estate sector. In the case of rental rates, the general rule is if real estate prices are more than 15 times annual rents, the market favors renters?under 15 and the market favors buyers. Finally, healthy communities have fewer foreclosed properties. Key indicators in housing include housing as a share of GDP, home ownership rates, monthly payments, percentage of household income spent on home payment, and sale price for a new single-family home. Housing as a share of GDP came to an average of 17% in 2010 as compared to 21% in 2005. Home ownership rates were 67% in 2010 as compared to 69% in 2004. The average monthly mortgage payment was $900 in 2010 compared to $1,360 in 2007. In 2010, only 18% of household income was spent on home payment, as compared to 32% back in 2005. Lastly, the average sales price of a new single-family home in 2010 was $222,000 as compared to $240,000 in 1980!

An investment management specialist will inform you that one of the main differences between investing in real estate versus in other assets is that real estate is highly tangible. Unlike stocks or bonds, you can actually see and touch your real estate property. Although it may seem like a good deal on paper, you have to be aware that owning real estate involves much more than collecting rent and paying bills. This often creates substantial pride of ownership, but also has its negatives because the property requires hands-on management. You don't need to paint the walls of a bond or mow the lawn of a stock! Real estate can produce an income, like a bond, as well as appreciate, like equity. If you are considering investing in multiple real estate properties, you should consult with an investment management specialist beforehand to decide how they will work in your current portfolio.

A confident Dana White defends policy of confidentiality on fighter pay and welcomes government scrutiny

CHICAGO -- Dana White has his mind made up. You're never going to know what UFC fighters truly make and that's just the way it has to be.

"So just because you don't know everything, you don't have to know anything, and to be honest with you? It's none of your [expletive] business how much these guys are making. They're making a lot of money. [...] How much money is none of your business. I'm not asking how much money you're making," said White (3:10 mark).

White believes that the salary information, so readily available in the other pro sports has ruined things for the athletes. He pointed to the recent $214 million megadeal inked by Detroit Tigers first baseman Prince Fielder.

"His whole life is going to change. He thought it was bad before with the (expletive) he had going on in his life? Everybody and their mother is coming after that 214," White said (2:10 mark). "Believe me when I tell you. Mark my words, Prince Fielder talk to me in five years and tell me what it was like when the news put out there that you were making $214 million dollars. I'm not going to do that to my guys."

The UFC often gets a bad rap for fighter pay because the only numbers revealed are those given to state commissions. The promotion beefs up the pay with behind-the-scenes discretionary and pay-per-view bonuses. White is often asked if all the complaints about pay would go away if Zuffa simply revealed all the details.

"Even when we sat down and had that first FOX meeting, the guys at FOX were like, holy [expletive]! They're like, 'Why don't you plaster this everywhere? This is the thing that will put you guys over the top. This is the thing that people love to see and talk about. Look at Mike Tyson.' And I said, 'Yeah, look at Mike Tyson,'" White said. "I've had these conversations with Mike. Mike said that when his money was reported, his [expletive] life was miserable. I'm not doing it."

Some believe the UFC's reluctance to be more transparent prompted the Federal Trade Commission to open an anti-trust violation investigation to look into Zuffa's practices.

"My understanding is that yes [the FTC has] opened a non-public investigation based on the acquisition we made of Strikeforce," said UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta.

CBSSports.com's Gregg Doyel said this is a sign of awful things to come for the UFC.

The FTC vs. the UFC? That's a heavyweight fight. That's Dana White's worst nightmare. The FTC looks for antitrust violations, picking apart monopolies as the unfair bullies they are -- and as far as I'm concerned, the UFC is guilty as charged.

The story set off White.

"There was guy yesterday, he wrote this story and you could tell this thing was like 'I want some attention. I want some attention. Maybe he'll get mad and say some [expletive].' [...] When we get stories written about us like that, I know it seems like I get crazy and come off too personal ... well, [expletive] yeah it's personal! What you're saying is untrue," said White (0:51 mark).

White said everything about the promotion is on the up and up.

"If the government wants to come in and look inside and take a peak and look around, they're more than welcome," White said. "Many of you have heard stories and all kinds of things ... mark my [expletive] words right here, right now, today ... we're not going anywhere. And everything we say is true."

As far as we know the FTC is still looking at Zuffa. White certainly came off sounding very confident nothing will come from the investigation.

White pointed out that there is no sport that has been more heavily scrutinized by governments all levels. The promotion has survived and thrived to become what White called the best sports story of the last 50 years.

(AP) ? The embattled president of Yemen arrived Saturday in the United States for medical treatment, according to a statement from the country's foreign press office.

President Ali Abdullah Saleh arrived at an unspecified location in the United States after a journey that took him from Oman, through London.

His staff has said he is in the United States to be treated for burns suffered during an assassination attempt in June.

The one-line Yemeni statement said Saleh was in the US for a "short-term private medical visit."

After months of unrest, Saleh agreed in November to end his 33-year-rule of the Arabian state. His trip comes as Yemen prepares for an election on Feb. 21 to select his successor.

It is unclear how long he intends to remain in the U.S. In a speech before he left Yemen for Oman a week ago, he promised to return home before the election, but the U.S. and its allies have pressured Saleh to leave Yemen for good.

American officials don't wish him to settle in the U.S., however, over concerns that it would be seen as harboring an autocratic leader accused by many of his countrymen of using violence to remain in power. Opponents have accused him of trying to interfere in Yemen's new unity government, even after he supposedly relinquished authority two months ago. He spent three months previously in Saudi Arabia for medical treatment, only to return to Yemen, prompting more protests.

Saleh's travel plans in the United States have not been disclosed for security reasons. It wasn't clear where he intended to stay while in the country, or where he would be receiving medical care.

He had been traveling on a chartered Emirates plane with a private doctor, several armed guards and relatives, according to an official in the Yemeni president's office who spoke with the AP on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the details.

President Obama Boosts Al Green's Sales Almost 500 Percent

Obama's singing of 'Let's Stay Together' at Apollo Theater last week upped sales of iconic 1972 hit.

Sure, clean energy, the return of manufacturing, a boost in education spending and saving the domestic car industry are awesome ways to revive the American economy. But another tactic President Obama might consider is more singing.

Because a week after the falsetto singer-in-chief unleashed his version of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" at an Apollo Theater fundraiser, sales of the good Rev.'s most iconic hit have taken off.

According to Billboard magazine, the viral video of the president singing the first line of the #1 hit from 1972 boosted sales of the song by 490 percent. In fact, the tune had its best week since SoundScan began tracking digital sales in 2003, with 16,000 downloads. The YouTube video of the impromptu recital has been viewed more than 4 million times.

It was likely the second surprise this week for Green, who was present at the Apollo event where Obama acknowledged the soul singer's presence in the room from the stage.

"Those guys didn't think I would do it," Obama laughed while pointing to his staffers at the side of the stage. "I told you I was going to do it. The Sandman did not come out."

Fans also rushed out this week to snatch up music by Etta James, the soul legend who passed on January 20. According to The Hollywood Reporter, James' sales were up 378 percent over the past week. One compilation, The Best of Etta James -- 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection, shot up from #162 to #46 on sales of 8,000, giving James her highest chart position ever. For the week ending January 22, James' overall catalog sold 30,000 copies, a significant jump from the previous week, when her collected album sold just over 6,000.

26 homes lost in Reno fire and 2,000 evacuated (AP)

RENO, Nev. ? Reno hasn't seen a winter this dry in more than 120 years. So residents welcomed a forecast that a storm was due to blow across the Sierra Nevada this week.

Instead, as many as 10,000 found themselves fleeing their homes while howling winds gusting to 82 mph pushed a fire toward them, destroying 26 homes and torching thousands of acres.

As the fire eased Friday, residents faced another threat: the storm was expected to bring high winds and a burst of rain and snow that could cause flash flooding on the charred land.

"The weather poses a significant threat," fire commander Paul Washam said. "We've got a lot of work to do and a short time to do it. If it rains, we'll have flood concerns."

Emergency crews, meanwhile, escorted evacuees in two separate burn areas to see their houses. Officials said evacuation orders would continue ? even in areas unaffected by the fire.

Connie Cryer went to the fire response command post on Friday with her 12-year-old granddaughter, Maddie Miramon, to find out if her house had survived the flames.

"We had to know so we could get some sleep," Cryer said, adding her house was spared but a neighbor's wasn't. She had seen wildfires before, but nothing on this scale.

"There was fire in front of me, fire beside me, fire behind me. It was everywhere," she said. "I don't know how more didn't burn up. It was terrible, all the wind and the smoke."

The blaze started shortly after noon Thursday and, fueled by the wind gusts, mushroomed to more than 6 square miles before firefighters stopped its surge toward Reno.

"The fire moved very, very fast," Washoe County Sheriff Mike Haley said. "Firefighters did an enormously good job of holding the number of structures down to 26."

The fire's cause isn't known. It started in a valley along a highway, which was closed because the heat destroyed some of the guardrails. Those rails will need to be replaced, state officials said.

Three schools were closed Friday and about 200 customers were without electricity.

The fire held steady around 3,900 acres and was 50 percent contained. Of the roughly 10,000 people ordered to leave their homes, about 2,000 of them remained under evacuation orders.

The high, erratic winds caused major challenges for crews evacuating residents, Sierra Front spokesman Mark Regan said. "In a matter of seconds, the wind would shift," he said.

Fire officials said Thursday's fire was "almost a carbon copy" of a blaze that destroyed 30 homes in Reno during similar summer-like conditions in mid-November.

State Forester Pete Anderson said he has not seen such hazardous fire conditions in winter in his 57 years in Nevada. Reno had no precipitation in December ? the last time that happened was 1883.

An inch of snow Monday ended the longest recorded dry spell in Reno history, a 56-day stretch that prompted Anderson to issue an unusual warning about wildfire threats.

"We're usually pretty much done with the fire season by the first of November, but this year it's been nonstop," Anderson said.

Firefighters were taking advantage of a break in the weather Friday to make more progress against the fire. At least 700 people, including firefighters from California, were expected to fight the fire.

Reno Fire Chief Michael Hernandez said there was one fatality in the fire area but declined to provide more details, saying an autopsy would be needed to determine the cause of death.

Kit Bailey, U.S. Forest Service fire chief at nearby Lake Tahoe, said conditions are so dry that even a forecast calling for rain and snow might not take the Reno-Tahoe area out of fire danger.

"The scary thing is a few days of drying after this storm cycle and we could be back into fire season again," he said.

Beijing releases key air pollution data (AP)

BEIJING ? Caving to public pressure, Beijing environmental authorities started releasing more detailed air quality data Saturday that may better reflect how bad the Chinese capital's air pollution is.

The initial measurements were low on a day where you could see blue sky. After a week of smothering smog, the skies over the city were being cleared by a north wind.

The readings of PM2.5 ? particulate matter less than 2.5 micrometers in size or about 1/30th the average width of a human hair ? were being posted on Beijing's environmental monitoring center's website. Such small particulates can penetrate deep into the lungs, so measuring them is considered a more accurate reflection of air quality than other methods.

It is the first time Beijing has publicly revealed PM2.5 data and follows a clamor of calls by citizens on social networking sites tired of breathing in gray and yellow air. The U.S. Embassy measures PM2.5 from a device on its rooftop and releases the results, and some residents have even tested the air around their neighborhoods and posted the results online.

Beijing is releasing hourly readings of PM2.5 that are taken from one monitoring site about 4 miles (7 kilometers) west of Tiananmen Square, the monitoring center's website said Saturday. It said the data was for research purposes and the public should only use it as a reference.

The reading at noon Saturday was 0.015 mg/m3, which would be classed as "good" for a 24-hour exposure at that level, according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards. The U.S. Embassy reading taken from its site on the eastern edge of downtown Beijing said its noon reading was "moderate." Its readings are posted on Twitter.

Steven Andrews, an environmental consultant who has studied Beijing's pollution data since 2006, said he was "already a bit suspicious" of Beijing's PM2.5 data. Within the 24-hour period to noon Saturday, Beijing reported seven hourly figures "at the very low level" of 0.003 milligrams per cubic meter.

"In all of 2010 and 2011, the U.S. Embassy reported values at or below that level only 18 times out of over 15,000 hourly values or about 0.1 percent of the time," said Andrews. "PM2.5 concentrations vary by area so a direct comparison between sites isn't possible, but the numbers being reported during some hours seem surpisingly low."

The Beijing center had promised to release PM2.5 data by the start of the Chinese Lunar New Year on Monday. It has six sites that can test for PM2.5 and 27 that can test for the larger, coarser PM10 particles that are considered less hazardous. The center is expected to buy equipment and build more monitoring sites to enable PM2.5 testing.

Beijing wasn't expected to include PM2.5 in its daily roundups of the air quality anytime soon. Those disclosures, for example "light" or "serious," are based on the amount of PM10, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide in the air.

Beijing interprets air quality using less stringent standards than the U.S. Embassy, so often when the government says pollution is "light," the embassy terms it "hazardous."

"There has been tremendous amounts of attention in the Chinese media ? whichever newspaper you pick up, whichever radio station you listen to, channel you watch ? they are all talking about PM2.5 and how levels are so high," said Andrews.

"What has been so powerful is that people are skeptical, and I think rightly skeptical," about the government's descriptions of data, he said.

Malawi leader: Women can dress as they wish (AP)

BLANTYRE, Malawi ? A spate of recent attacks on women wearing pants and miniskirts has prompted Malawi's president to declare on national television that women have the right to choose their dress.

President Bingu wa Mutharika also denied Thursday that he ordered street children and vendors to attack women, who have been stripped of their pants and short skirts.

The president says, "Every woman and girl has the right to dress the way they wish."

That hasn't always been so. During the 1963-1994 dictatorship of the late Hastings Kamuzu Banda, women in Malawi were banned from wearing trousers. Banda's "indecency in dress" laws were repealed when democracy came in 1994.

Women's rights activists plan to wear pants during a protest march Friday.

Apple launches iBooks 2 e-Textbook platform

We're here at Apple's education-flavored event at the Guggenheim museum in New York City. Phil Schiller has just taken to the stage and announced the first half of Apple's platform that's going to "reinvent the textbook:" iBooks 2. Saying that there were 1.5 million iPads currently in use in Education (using 20,000 specific apps), the revamped book-stand now includes education-specific features to help the budding students of the world.

You'll be able to paw through content, stopping to flick through detailed 3D animated models of elements within, access video and definitions without leaving the page. VP of Productivity Applications, Roger Rosner said that "Clearly, no printed book can compete with this:" given the constantly-updated data available, that's kinda obvious. Still, you'll be able to read in a text-heavy portrait or picture-biased landscape mode and there's also the option to have random pop-quizzes appear to keep you on your toes. Annotations is an integral part of the system: you can add stickies to individual pages and aggregate them into virtual 3 x 5-inch note-cards for revision during finals. You'll also get the same purchase, download and re-download rights you enjoy in the company's other stores.

The company's partnered (initially) with textbook makers Pearson, McGraw Hill and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, as the trio are responsible for 90 percent of all textbooks sold -- as well as DK and the E.O. Wilson Foundation. Phil was gushing, saying that he couldn't "overemphasize the importance of these partners working with us." Pearson's High School Science, Biology, DK's Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Life, Natural History Insects, Animals and My First ABC as well as the first two chapters of E.O. Viral Chicago video points to disturbing trend (AP)

CHICAGO ? It seems to defy the logic of committing crimes in a way to avoid getting caught: Ruffians intentionally recording themselves on video beating and robbing someone, then posting it on YouTube so anyone anywhere can see it, including police.

The latest example of this disturbing but increasingly common phenomenon comes from Chicago, where police Wednesday arrested seven teens who apparently did just that. Their video had gone viral and led to their arrest within just days of the Sunday afternoon attack.

The practice, some experts say, is a modern twist on the age-old human penchant for boasting about one's exploits to impress the community at large and to warn perceived rivals that their group is more powerful than others.

"Medieval warriors putting the heads of their enemies on sticks, scalping and even school yard brawls in the `50s ? they're all ways of displaying that dominance in public," said Pam Rutledge, a Palo Alto, Calif.-based psychologist who heads the Media Psychology Research Center. "These new tools ? the Internet, YouTube ? just let you spread the word much farther."

Throughout the more than three-minute video, the attackers ? many with sweat shirt hoods over their heads and some wearing masks ? are seen yelling at the visibly terrified victim, punching and kicking him in the face with apparent glee as he curled up on the snow-covered ground. Police believe the lone girl involved lured the victim to the alley on the city's South Side.

Posting incriminating material online might also reveal a shaky grasp of how cyberspace works.

"These guys are bragging online without understanding they just provided irrefutable evidence of a crime," she said. "It says something both about their naivete ? and their stupidity."

Speaking to reporters in Chicago Wednesday, Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy noted that episodes of youth violence ending up in online videos have become more frequent everywhere.

"This is a national epidemic," he said. "It's not something that's particular to Chicago."

The Chicago teens were charged in the beating and robbery of a 17-year-old high school student in an incident that stemmed from a previous dispute last October, police said. Police said the posted video helped to identify the alleged attackers.

One teen was charged as an adult. The rest ? a 15-year-old girl, two 16-year-old boys and three 15-year-old boys ? were cited in juvenile delinquency petitions. All face one count each of robbery and aggravated battery, including the teen who recorded the video.

A striking aspect of the video is just how at ease the attackers seem about being filmed. One even pauses from kicking and punching the victim's face to calmly instruct whoever is holding the camera how to compose the shot. He then walks back and resumes pummeling the boy.

Viewers who posted comments online identified the alleged attackers by name, including 17-year-old Raymond Palomino, who appeared in bond court Wednesday, his head bowed and looking ill-at ease. His bail was set at $100,000. Palomino's face is visible in the video.

Police said the attackers stole shoes, a wallet and $180 in cash from the victim, who was treated at a hospital for a laceration to his lip, bruises and abrasions.

Another website provided an outlet to fan the flames leading up to the attack.

Raymond Palomino's father claimed Sunday's beating followed an after-school attack on Raymond and another boy. Michael Palomino, a Cook County sheriff's deputy, said incendiary comments posted on Facebook after the alleged beating of his son contributed to the situation spiraling out of control.

"They're making it sound like he did everything," Palomino said, speaking to reporters following his son's initial appearance in court Wednesday. "It's just one side of the story."

The sheriff's deputy, who said he turned his son in after seeing the viral video, conceded what his son did was wrong. But he also accused prosecutors of exaggerating his son's role.

McCarthy, the city's top cop, shared the bewilderment of many officials and observers about why the teens saw fit to post the video, thereby incriminating themselves.

But while older Americans may express astonishment that someone behaving badly would take the added step of displaying that behavior online, it doesn't surprise teens who have never known a world without the Internet, said Tim Hwang, president of the 750,000-member National Youth Association.

"There's an impulse with youth today to put everything online, so the fact (this beating) was posted online doesn't itself make it more exceptional," said Hwang, 19.

Since always thinking in terms of cyberspace is second nature to today's youth, it wouldn't immediately strike them as odd that the alleged attackers thought in those terms, too, he added.

The video-recorded attack in Chicago isn't the first to attract attention on the Web. In 2009, footage of the fatal beating of a 16-year-old honor student was circulated worldwide.

In that video, captured by a cellphone camera, Derrion Albert is seen being punched, hit on the head with large boards and kicked in the head. The fight broke out after classes were dismissed at a high school on Chicago's South Side.

Four teens were sentenced to lengthy prison terms last year in that case, which sparked outrage around the country. A fifth suspect tried as a juvenile was ordered to remain imprisoned until he turns 21.

The most recent incident was different in that the attack was videotaped by someone apparently affiliated with the attackers. The Albert attack was recorded by a bystander.

That these latest attackers beat the victim and uploaded the video to YouTube not only illustrated their immaturity, it also suggests they are deeply insecure, somehow calculating that the stunt would boost their social standing, Rutledge said.

If that was their thinking, they badly miscalculated.

"They are getting the opposite reinforcement that they intended," Rutledge said, citing the arrests. "They put it up to show how cool and tough they were. Instead, it left people thinking, `You guys are complete idiots.'"

Overcoming cancer drug resistance with nanoparticles
(Nanowerk News) One of the ways in which cancer cells evade anticancer therapy is by producing a protein that pumps drugs out of the cell before these compounds can exert their cell-killing effects. A research team at Northwestern University has found that biocompatible iron oxide-titanium dioxide nanoparticles can bypass this pump and enable DNA-damaging anticancer drugs to reach the cell nucleus.
Gayle Woloschak, a member of the Northwestern University Center for Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence, led the research team that developed this nanoparticle. She and her collaborators reported their findings in the journal Cancer Research ("Nanocarriers Enhance Doxorubicin Uptake in Drug-Resistant Ovarian Cancer Cells").
The goal of this work was two-fold: identify a nanoparticle that would overcome pump-related drug resistance which could simultaneously serve as a tumor imaging agent. The researchers chose a nanoparticle with an iron oxide core surrounded by a titanium dioxide shell. The iron oxide core serves as a powerful magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent, while the titanium dioxide shell can bind to anticancer agents such as doxorubicin through a chemical bond that will break in the acidic conditions inside a cancer cell.
The investigators treated drug-resistant ovarian cancer cells with a doxorubicin-loaded nanoparticle and showed that the nanoparticle was readily transported into the cells. More importantly, the nanoparticles released their drug payload, enabling doxorubicin to reach the cell nucleus. Doxorubicin kills cells through a process that involves binding to DNA in the nucleus. When compared to doxorubicin alone, the resistant cells accumulated up to 6 times more drug then when administered using the nanoparticle-drug combination. Interestingly, the researchers found that when they co-administered even empty nanoparticles (no doxorubicin) with transferrin, a molecule involved in iron transport, they saw increased cell uptake of transferrin. This observation is important since many research groups are developing nanoparticles that incorporate transferrin on the surface to stimulate cell uptake. In this scenario, it could be beneficial to co-treat with this type of empty particle.
