Why the Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes Divorce Isn't A Total Shock ...

Why the Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes Divorce Isn't A Total Shock

So remember that day when Tom Cruise decided he needed to hop on a couch to shout his love for Katie Holmes to anyone that would listen?

Well, that should have been the foreshadowing that something was inevitably wrong. I'm sure everyone had seen this said a million times, but was it really all that necessary to showcase that level of intensity??Probably not. If anything, it probably made it even less?believable.

That said, I took a minute. Then I realized that in reality, I wasn't all that shocked. Simply put, there were a few things that stood out. So I started theorizing... And here's what I came up with:

It may have been an arranged marriage...

Not sure if you remember, but I sure do:?the several stories that Tom screened actresses for the role of his wife... And Katie was FOURTH on the list -- after a few other lovely starlets. This story has floated around for a while, but it does raise the question as to why he would NEED to audition girlfriends. And then, land and move forward with his fourth choice. At this point, it raises two interesting questions (a) Was he happy with his leading lady? (b) Why did he even NEED to audition a leading lady?

Katie's movie career took a back seat...

Before Tom, Katie did quite a bit of acting. Not blockbusters, but she was a busy girl. Dawson's Creek, Phone Booth with Colin Farrell, Pieces of April... Now, of course during their courtship in 2005, she was a busy girl (Remember a little movie called Batman Begins?)?And then dipped out of the movie scene for two years. Yes this was in part because of being a new mom. But was it solely because of that?

... And her status changed!

One 2006 hit, Katie became a mom and a socialite. Not quite actress as much as her interviews for quite some time were about her wardrobe, workout routine, being a new mom, playdates, scientology... Anything but her acting career.

Essentially, Katie was Kate (to Tom), she was ?more glam than the sweet girl we fell in love with... And just like that she went from actress to an A-Lister's wife.

Why they really broke up we may never know.?But, if nothing else, this is a great case study to showcase that romance doesn't (and shouldn't) come in a bottle... Nor does it always come in the form of a fairy tale wedding in an Italian Castle.

Wildfires hit close to home for author: That's where I grew up

Among the 32,000 mandatory evacuees in Colorado Springs fleeing the raging Waldo Canyon fire are the residents of 122 Buckeye Drive.

That's the house where I grew up.

By my estimation, my boyhood home is roughly 1? miles from the leading edge of a fire that has scorched more than 15,000 acres, with no sign of being extinguished. If the conflagration keeps coming east, the four-bedroom wooden house on Buckeye Drive will almost certainly be destroyed along with the rest of the Rockrimmon, Colo., neighborhood where I was raised.

I don't know the current owners of the house, nor do I know the vast majority of the residents of modern-day Rockrimmon. My thoughts are with those people first and foremost.

Personally, I'm just worried about my memories. I haven't lived there since graduating from college in 1987. But it is a surreal, frightening and horrifying feeling watching places from my youth on the national news, as they teeter on the brink of literally going up in flames.

The places you're seeing ablaze on TV and in photos ? I've been there. Many of the happiest and most carefree times of my life were there.

The sight of fires threatening the Air Force Academy? They also threaten Air Academy High School, a public school on the AFA base. I graduated from there in 1983.

The picturesque Garden of the Gods National Park, currently closed due to the fires just outside its boundaries? I can't count how many times we went there to climb the jutting rocks or have picnics.

The destroyed Flying W Ranch? We went to shows and ate barbecue there, and friends of mine had summer jobs at the place.

The houses of Mountain Shadows that are glowing orange? That's the neighborhood next to Rockrimmon. I've been all over that burning ground.

[Related: Wildfire menaces Colorado Springs, forces 32,000 to flee]

When I was growing up there was no Mountain Shadows, just a hilly playground stretching for miles to entertain kids with bikes and BB guns and imaginations. We used to hike back into that area for the day from my house, sometimes packing hot dogs and buns. We'd have a little camp fire, cook lunch, then make absolutely sure the fire was out. Even to adolescents, it was abundantly clear what a potential tinderbox the area could be: scrub oak, deadwood, tons of trees set in a dry climate.

The entire area was a rustic, unspoiled gem when we moved there from the more blue-collar south end of town in 1972. The neighborhood was new, carved out of the foothills rising between the plains to the east and the front range of the Rocky Mountains to the west.

Dirt roads, horse ranches and a dairy farm were within walking distance. Deer were common in the neighborhood and bears not unheard of. When they opened an elementary school across the street from my house, we spent the first two years of class in trailers.

This was the beginning of a 1970s housing boom in Colorado Springs that would turn the place into the fastest-growing city in America for several years running. Gorgeous scenery, a low-humidity climate and the proximity to mountain activities made the Springs the hottest of properties. The population has more than doubled since I was a kid, now standing at more than 400,000, according to census data.

For many years, the main growth area was from Rockrimmon outward ? both west and east. When they were paving the new roads and preparing to build the new houses in what would become Mountain Shadows, during my high school and college years, the area became our teenage hangout to drink beer and kiss girls and climb hills in a buddy's Jeep.

By the time I moved away to Louisville, Ky., Mountain Shadows had become an established neighborhood. Eventually some of the trees, ant hills and prairie dog towns were replaced by a convenience store, an apartment complex and additional schools. Suburbia moved in and shoved wilderness out.

On my frequent visits back to the Springs, my nostalgic friends and I would bore our wives and children with complaints about how overgrown the city had become, most notably all those houses that sprang up against the mountains. Mankind's avaricious intrusion detracted from the picturesque view looking west, and from the pristine mountainscape we grew up with.

Today those growth areas are on fire. I might not have liked the progress into hillside, but surely none of us wished this upon the inhabitants of those homes.

It was startling how fast this calamity came upon us ? but then again, that's what wild fires do. When the names of the first affected areas starting being broadcast, they hit close to home ? Manitou Springs, Woodland Park, Chipita Park.

Then came Tuesday night, when the wind-fueled fire jumped across two containment lines and landed in our backyard. Then the images became all too real and familiar, threatening the setting of a blessed, blissful and carefree childhood.

That's when the Waldo Canyon fire literally hit home.

Google Pumps Up Jelly Bean?s Face Unlock Feature With A New ?Liveness Check?

livenesscheckBack when Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was first introduced in Hong Kong last year plenty of us jaded tech folk took a shine to its new Face Unlock feature, which allows users to unlock their devices with their front-facing cameras. Of course, we now know that it isn?t terribly secure ? a picture of your face was apparently good enough to fool it ? but Google seems to have made Face Unlock just a bit more secure in their early Jelly Bean release.

6 Presentation Tips to Elevate Your Online Video Marketing ...

From this week?s blog at Target Marketing Magazine:

(My co-author, Perry Alexander, wrote this week?s issue):

6 presentation tips to elevate your online video marketing

The video you create is but one component of your online direct marketing campaign. Yes, the video is what viewers are driven to?it?s the vehicle that delivers your story. However, without lists, email and landing page copywriting and design, blog comments and posts,
social media entries, pay-per-click ads, YouTube advertising, etc., your video stands
little chance to be viewed.

Think of the parallel: we know that without the intentional series of steps to get our direct mail package into the readers? hands, opened, and scanned long enough for them to catch the lead, there?s slim chance it?ll make any impact.

And, just as the direct mail letter headline and lead must drive the reader to stick with it, so must the first few seconds of your video. Your video must create and instantly set the visual and auditory tone that will draw the viewer through those precious first few seconds, and into your story.

My co-author and business colleague, Gary Hennerberg is the master copywriter of our team and, as he says, I ?make stuff look good.? I make sure the story isn?t overshadowed by
lousy presentation or distractions, which can repel, or at least divert the reader. Let?s go through some of the ways to make your video command attention?during the first few seconds and beyond.

1. Bad audio will douse viewers? interest long before bad video will. Don?t rely on your on-camera mike or, worse, your computer mike. You?ve heard these videos?they sound like they were recorded in a barrel or a cave. Viewer?s interpretation: your presentation was slapped together; therefore your product or service is, too, so why should I bother listening?

The Deep Dive: If your camera has a mike input, use a lav mike (Gary and I each
use a $25 Audio-Technica). If there?s no external mike input on your camera,
use a digital voice recorder to record quality sound, either through its built-in
mikes or plug the lav mike into it (we both use the same $100 Sony recorder).
Then, in editing, sync the audio from both the camera and voice recorder, then mute
the camera audio. The mechanics of this are tricky at first, but once you?ve
done it a couple of times, it becomes routine, and your sound is crisp and
clear.

2. Bad video won?t help matters. A webcam video looks like, well, you used a webcam?even an HD webcam. Not only is the image soft, but exposure is usually off, color isn?t great, and what about all that stuff in the background behind you? The
message struggles to get out. Again, it screams that your story doesn?t deserve
the viewer?s consideration. It?s just a throwaway webcam production about a
throwaway idea. What does your viewer do? Click away to something else after
just a few seconds.

The Deep Dive: You wouldn?t dream of tossing a half-baked direct mail piece
out into the market, expecting it to convince your audience of the value
whatever you?re offering them, would you? Anything that distracts from the
message must be stripped away, so only the message is noticed. Same with video.
Get a $100 Flip or Sony camera and a tripod, or even the latest iPhone. Better:
spend $400 for an HD video camera for long-form videos. For your shots are under
5?10 minutes each, use your DSLR (We use a $100 flip-type camera on Gary?s
videos).

3. On-camera jitters? Maybe the prospect of speaking into a camera lens is frightening
or at least off-putting. Really, though, after several miserable attempts, you will
improve. Evenutally, you get to where you imagine you?re just talking with
another person in the room, and your fear melts away.

The Deep Dive: Your job is to tell the story. How? Reveal your personality
and mastery. Build trust. The call-to-action will produce nothing for you until
after that?s all been established. Consider being in front of the camera just
long enough to introduce your premise, then moving into slides, charts, photos,
graphics, or other images that tell your story. That way, you don?t have to
memorize a long script. You can refer to notes as you narrate what?s on screen.
On-camera script reading is usually deadly, anyway. If you?re on screen for a
quick 20?30 seconds, know your stuff. Roll through several takes until you?ve looked
that monster in the eye (lens), and said your piece naturally, completely, and with
relaxed authority. Now you have their attention and trust!

4. Stock photos, stock footage, stock music, stock sound effects? You?ve seen the
websites with stiff and trite stock photos. Somebody, please explain what that
might ever accomplish, because we?ve all seen that picture a thousand times.
Filler doesn?t move the story along. But, relevant graphics that work can
emphasize a point quickly and vividly. And an occasional ?foley? sound effect
can emphasize a point. Just don?t overuse transition swooshes, or they?ll become
distracting gimmicks.

The Deep Dive: Map out your storyline. What images will support
or clarify what you?re saying? Use images that are specific to your product,
service, technique, timeliness, etc. Short of that, invest time finding stock
images, footage, music, or sounds. It?s all online, and for not much money.
YouTube and Vimeo even offer stock music beds you can use at no cost. But be
careful in your choices. Be brutal in editing. Anything that distracts or
detracts from your story and message, leading to your call-to-action, must be
cut.

5. Go short or go long? Conventional wisdom, born out by YouTube analytics, is that
video viewer falloff is precipitous after the first 30 seconds or less. So,
does that mean we must never consider creating a 3-minute or, horrors, a
15-minute video? Perhaps. Remember, everything must serve to support the story.
Do that right, and they?ll stay with you.

The Deep Dive: Conventional wisdom has always warned us not to
use long-form copy in letters. However, seasoned, successful copywriters know
that a well-told story will hold interest across 2, 4, even 16 pages. Same with
video. Don?t rush to push features, advantages, benefits. Find the relevant
hook, then reveal, build and educate about the issue. Lead them to want?then
crave?the answer to the quandary or dilemma you?re setting up. Now, the sales
copy tastes like good soup.

6. Editing is half the storytelling. Putting up an unedited video is like mailing the
first draft of your letter. It?s probably loose, meandering, dulling to the
senses. Resist, revise, and remove whatever doesn?t move your story along!

The Deep Dive: Video editing brings clarity and precision to
your story. The pace and direction are honed, so the viewer is drawn in and
held through the call-to-action. It?s an interwoven dance of timing, splicing,
movement, color, design, sound, mood, and the ruthless removal of what?s not
contributing. But, you need two things: A) the knack to know when it?s right
and when it?s not and, B) mastery of a video editing program, so you can accomplish
your vision.

There?s so much more to cover, but perhaps you?re getting a
sense of how online video marketing requires many skills and decisions so
familiar to the direct mail pro. Different tools ? different vehicles
??similar foundational concepts. As always, we invite your comments,
criticism, or questions.

Drop me an email, and we?ll get you the list of resources,
brand names, part numbers, and such of what we?ve found works in our
ever-evolving video marketing tool chest.

Real estate sales strong in Erie | GoErie.com/Erie Times-News

Howard W. "Hoddy" Hanna III wears a shiny green button on his suit coat that makes a simple promise: "If you list it, we will sell it."

Hanna and a number of other area real estate agents are feeling pretty confident in that message these days.

Through June 12, the number of homes sold by the Greater Erie Board of Realtors was up more than 4 percent from the previous year, while the average price of those homes was up nearly 8 percent.

Numbers for the first three months of the year were even more dramatic.

Through the end of March, home prices in Erie County were up 16.6 percent, the third largest jump of any major market in the United States, according to a report in Real Estate Broker's Insider.

To a lesser degree, there's mounting evidence that the U.S. real estate market as a whole is improving.

A report Tuesday from the Standard & Poor's Case-Shiller home price index shows that housing prices improved during April in 19 of our 20 largest cities.

And a measure of national prices rose 1.3 percent in April from March, the first increase in seven months.

Hanna can easily explain the improvements in Cape Coral, Fla., and Grand Rapids, Mich., the two markets that top the list of most improved. Both, he said, were hit hard during the recession and are showing signs of bouncing back.

Erie was different. The area's steady-as-she-goes real estate market saw only modest declines, during even the darkest days of the most recent recession.

Now, both statistical and anecdotal evidence suggest that the usually plodding real estate market is riding a wave.

Some of the reasons are simple, Hanna said.

"What is going on is supply and demand," he said. "We are in a rising market. There is pent-up demand."

Toby Froehlich, owner of Coldwell Banker Select Realtors in Erie, said the numbers don't entirely surprise him.

"We didn't get hit as hard with the foreclosure issues," he said. "Two, the local economy is stronger than anyone wants to admit. You have jobs, you have record-low interest rates. It was a lot of things going on for us."

A growing number of competitive bidding situations is more evidence of a stronger real estate market.

Hanna said his agents are making frequent use of a new program that allows prospective buyers to automatically submit a second bid if their first offer is met or surpassed.

Strong sales figures could be substantially better if it were not for one shortcoming, said John Peluso, senior vice president and regional market manager for Howard Hanna.

There aren't enough houses to sell, particularly in the middle price range of $125,000 to $250,000, he said.

"We could probably be doing twice as much business if we had the houses," he said.

Hanna said the inventory of houses for sale is at its lowest point since 2004.

Froehlich said local Realtors have about 1,350 single-family homes listed at the moment, about 150 fewer than he considers ideal.

Froehlich and Hanna see another soft spot in the local real estate market. Fans of new construction don't have many options, they said.

"Construction is very weak," Froehlich said. "There are very few builders who can get financing and very few developers who can get financing."

Mortgage financing is available at historically low interest rates, Hanna said. But securing a loan can take time.

"There are a lot of hoops we have to jump through," he said.

Hanna said evidence suggests that more people are deciding homeownership is worth jumping through those hoops.

After falling into the low 60 percent range during the recession, those numbers and interest in buying a home are bouncing back, he said.

When Harry Met Sally: When Romantic Comedies Were Actually Fun and Smart [Video]

If you have never seen this movie, you must. Not because the brilliant Nora Ephron—the movie's screenwriter—passed away yesterday, but because it's a brilliant simple movie. A funny, clever, sometimes poignant, every time spot on look at relationships. A romantic comedy that is actually good cinema, not just the candied crap cakes made out of canned pink goo that populate movie theater nowadays. More »

Pinterest for Android - First look

Pinterest for Android

Pinterest for Android is real. It exists. We've seen it. Here it is. Only, it's not quite ready for public consumption, and so this is all you get to see. But we can tell you all about what we've seen, and it's pretty much what you'd expect from a Pinterest app on Android. The pic above hosts the board, and from there you tap into the individual pins. Scrolling on the Nexus 7 with Jelly Bean was impressive to say the least. The big differentiator over the iOS version of Pinterest, of course, is sharing. You'll be able to share pins in the same way that you can share anything else on Android, and that's a powerful feature. And of course it'll sync up with your current Pinterest account.

Here's the rub, though. The Pinterest app is still very much in development, and not even the lead dev, with whom we spoke here at Google I/O, is sure exactly what it's going to look like when it's released later this year. So it's coming, it's just that nobody's sure what, exactly, it'll look like.

So stay tuned, and keep pinning.

Turkey warns Syria away from its border

BEIRUT (AP) ? Turkey warned Syria on Tuesday to keep its forces away from the countries' troubled border or risk an armed response ? a furious reply to the downing of a Turkish military plane last week by the Damascus regime.

NATO backed up Turkey and condemned Syria for shooting down the plane but stopped short of threatening military action, reflecting its reluctance to get involved in a conflict that could ignite a broader war.

Near the capital of Damascus, meanwhile, Syria's elite Republican Guard forces battled rebels in some of the most intense fighting involving the special forces since the uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime began in March 2011, according to activists.

More than 14,000 people have been killed in the last 15 months. Despite global outrage over the crackdown by the Assad regime, the international response has been focused entirely on diplomacy and sanctions, not intervention, as the violence escalates.

In a speech to parliament, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Syria shot down the unarmed reconnaissance plane in international airspace without warning in a "deliberate" and "hostile" act.

"Any military element that approaches the Turkish border from Syria and poses a security risk and danger will be regarded as a threat and treated as a military target," Erdogan said.

He said border violations in the region were not uncommon and Syrian helicopters had violated Turkish airspace five times recently without a Turkish response. The two countries share a 566-mile (910-kilometer) frontier.

Turkey's limited response to Friday's incident suggested there was no appetite for a violent retaliation. Still, Edrogan cautioned Syria against testing his resolve.

"No one should be deceived by our cool-headed stance," he added. "Our acting with common sense should not be perceived as a weakness."

Syrian officials insist the plane violated its airspace, saying a Syrian officer shot it down with anti-aircraft fire after spotting an unidentified jet flying at high speed and low altitude.

Turkey disputes that. Turkey says although the RF-4E jet had unintentionally strayed into Syrian airspace, it was inside international airspace when it was brought down over the Mediterranean. Its two pilots are still missing.

The RF-4E is the reconnaissance version of the U.S.-built Phantom fighter-bomber which was used heavily in the Vietnam War. Most of the RF-4Es were unarmed, although some have been equipped with cannons and racks for bombs.

Erdogan has said Syrian forces also fired on a search-and-rescue plane Friday following the downing of the jet. It was not clear if the second plane was hit.

The incident renewed fears of an escalation of the violence that could draw in neighboring countries. The Turks have launched pre-emptive attacks in the past, notably in 2007 and 2008 against Kurdish rebels in Iraq who used Iraqi territory to strike targets inside Turkey as part of their war for Kurdish self-rule.

The head of NATO called the downing of the jet unacceptable after Turkey briefed NATO's North Atlantic Council about it. The talks were held under Article 4 of NATO's founding treaty, which allows a member to request consultations if its security has been threatened.

The meeting was the first time a country has invoked Article 4 in nearly a decade. In 2003, Turkey also invoked Article 4 when tensions escalated ahead of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said the alliance condemned the Syrian attack "in the strongest terms" and expressed solidarity with Turkey ? but he did not speak of any possible armed action against Syria.

"It's my clear expectation that the situation won't continue to escalate," Fogh Rasmussen told reporters after the meeting. "What we have seen is a completely unacceptable act, and I would expect Syria to take all necessary steps to avoid such events in the future."

The uprising against Assad has obliterated the once-close ties between Syria and Turkey. Turkey has repeatedly called for Assad to step down as 33,000 Syrians have sought refuge in Turkey from the violence.

Turkey also is also hosting civilian opposition groups as well as members of the Free Syrian Army, which is fighting to bring down the Assad regime.

"We will continue to support the struggle of our brothers in Syria at any cost," Erdogan said. Turkey denies harboring armed Syrian rebels.

Fogh Rasmussen has repeatedly said NATO would need a clear international mandate and regional support before it embarked on a mission in Syria. Last year, NATO launched airstrikes on Libyan government targets only after receiving such a mandate from the U.N. Security Council, along with backing from the Arab League.

But Russia and China ? both veto-wielding members of the Security Council ? have stood by Assad and shielded his regime from international sanctions. Both countries are keen to avoid any type of military intervention in Syria, and they vow to veto any attempts.

Military intervention has been all but ruled out in Syria for now, in part because the conflict has so much potential for escalation. Damascus has strong allegiances to powerful forces including Lebanon's Hezbollah and Shiite powerhouse Iran.

Russia's president and foreign minister repeated Tuesday that Iran should take part in a meeting on the Syrian crisis in Geneva, slated for Saturday.

"The more of Syria's neighbors that are brought into this process the better," President Vladimir Putin told Russian journalists traveling with him in Jordan. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said he will take part in the Geneva meeting even if Iran is not represented, but without Iran, "we will be talking about how then to gather all of the participants."

A deputy to international envoy Kofi Annan told a closed Security Council meeting that the principles and guidelines for a Syrian-led political transition must be agreed on before the Geneva meeting can happen, a diplomat said on condition of anonymity because the meeting was not public.

The diplomat said that Nasser Al-Kidwa, a deputy joint special envoy of the United Nations and the Arab League on Syria, told the council Tuesday that Annan believes the meeting he is trying to organize will only be worth holding if participants can agree on how a Syrian political transition should work, and can't simply be a "talking shop."

As part of a U.N.-Arab League peace plan that failed to take hold in Syria, U.N. observers were sent to the country, but they suspended their work earlier this month after coming under fire. The U.N.'s peacekeeping chief, Herve Ladsous, told the Security Council on Tuesday that it is too dangerous for the observers to resume their mission, although it could restart at some point, according to a diplomat who spoke on condition of anonymity because the session was closed.

Assad blames the violence gripping his country on foreign terrorists and armed gangs. In the early months of the uprising, he acknowledged a need for political reforms, but his opponents have dismissed his gestures as a facade.

Tuesday's fighting near Republican Guard compounds and bases in the suburbs of Damascus killed at least six people, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Republican Guard, which is commanded by Assad's younger brother, Maher, has the task of protecting the capital, the seat of the regime's power. The fighting suggested growing boldness by the rebels.

Clashes erupt regularly in the suburbs between troops and rebels, but Assad's forces have firm control of Damascus and it is very rare for fighting to take place near the Republican Guard bases. It was unclear what prompted the clashes or how close they were to the heavily guarded compounds.

Syria's military remains loyal to Assad despite some recent high-profile defections, and the opposition is fragmented and unable to attack as a unified force, according to U.S. intelligence officials who briefed reporters in Washingon on the Syrian conflict.

The regime has maintained troop loyalty by keeping paychecks coming even as food and fuel run out for the rest of the country, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity to provide the sensitive information

The officials say the opposition has learned effective guerrilla-like tactics, but is still too disorganized to hold territory, which will likely produce a continuing "seesaw" battle between the two sides.

Also Tuesday, Syria's new Cabinet was sworn in in front of Assad.

Although he vowed after May 7 parliamentary elections to make the government more inclusive to politicians from other parties, the new government is headed by a key loyalist, and the foreign, defense and interior ministers kept their jobs.

The opposition boycotted the elections, saying they were designed to strengthen Assad's power. Parliament is considered little more than a rubber stamp in Syria, where the president and a tight coterie of advisers hold the real power.

During the swearing-in, Assad said Syria must direct all its energy to overcoming the conflict.

"We are living in a genuine state of war," he said.

Tropical Storm Debby drenches Florida

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Practically parked off Florida's Gulf Coast since the weekend, Tropical Storm Debby raked the Tampa Bay area with high wind and heavy rain Monday in a drenching that could top 2 feet over the next few days and trigger widespread flooding.

At least one person was killed Sunday by a tornado spun off by Debby in Florida, and Alabama authorities searched for a man who disappeared in the rough surf.

An estimated 35,000 homes and businesses lost electricity. But as of midafternoon, the slow-moving storm had caused only scattered damage, including flooding in some low-lying areas.

The bridge leading to St. George Island, a vacation spot along the Florida Panhandle, was closed to everyone except residents, renters and business owners to keep looters out. The island had no power, and palm trees had been blown down, but roads were passable.

"Most true islanders are hanging in there because they know that you may or may not be able to get back to your home when you need to," said David Walker, an island resident having a beer at Eddy Teach's bar. He said he had been through many storms on the island and Debby was on the weaker end of the scale.

Gov. Rick Scott declared a statewide emergency, allowing authorities to put laws against price-gouging into effect and override bureaucratic hurdles to deal with the storm.

By late afternoon, Debby was in the Gulf of Mexico, 30 miles southwest of Apalachicola, with sustained winds around 45 mph.

A tropical storm warning remained in effect for the coastal counties of west-central and southwest Florida, forecasters said Monday evening.

Forecasters said it would crawl to the northeast, come ashore along Florida's northwestern coast on Wednesday and track slowly across the state, exiting along the Atlantic Coast by Saturday morning and losing steam along the way.

Parts of northern Florida could get 10 to 15 inches of rain, and some spots as much as 25 inches, as the storm wrings itself out, forecasters said.

"The widespread flooding is the biggest concern," said Florida Emergency Operations Center spokeswoman Julie Roberts. "It's a concern that Debby is going to be around for the next couple of days, and while it sits there, it's going to continue to drop rain. The longer it sits, the more rain we get."

High winds and the threat of flooding forced the closing of an interstate highway bridge that spans Tampa Bay and links St. Petersburg with areas to the southwest.

Monday evening, the state announced the closing of the Howard Frankland bridge that connects Tampa, including the region's major airport, and St. Petersburg. The eight-lane bridge carries Interstate 275 over Tampa Bay. Traffic was being diverted to an alternative span.

People in several sparsely populated counties near the crook of Florida's elbow were urged to leave low-lying neighborhoods because of the danger of flooding. Shelters opened in some places.

On St. Pete Beach in the Tampa Bay area, surfers enjoyed the large waves in the Gulf, which is usually so calm the water looks like glass. Residents cleaned up debris in yards and streets from a possible tornado Sunday.

"The wind picked up so bad. It's very, very scary. I ran into the closet underneath the hallway stairs," said Ann Garrison, who has lived on the barrier island for 20 years but has never seen such strong winds. She said that when she came back out after just a few minutes, "the fence was gone, and it was in the middle of the yard."

Nearby, a likely tornado ripped the roof off a marina and an apartment complex and knocked down fences, trees and signs.

Kourosh Bakhtiarian's yard was flooded. He said people were driving around the neighborhood to gawk at the damage, and he complained that police hadn't closed off the streets.

"We have a lot of visitors from outside of this area. They just want to see exactly where the disaster is. I mean, this is not the happiest time," he said.

On St. George Island, many businesses were closed, but Eddy Teach's bar had a few customers and used a generator to keep beer and food cold.

"The tourists cleared out. It's not a good thing and hurts the economy during a week in peak season," said Patrick Sparks, a manager at the bar. He scoffed at the storm, which was well below the 74 mph threshold for a hurricane: "It's a little rash to send everyone home."

Nakia Hill: My First Day at NABJ - 2012

I arrived in New Orleans safely on Wednesday, but caught a bad case of jet lag after my six
hour trip from Boston. I missed a majority--okay, I missed all of the NABJ events on the first
night. My 30 minute nap, which turned into four hours caused me to miss Vice President Joe
Biden speak and soultress Melanie Fiona perform. I did get a taste of the Big Easy's night life as
I hung out on Bourbon Street and ate jambalaya at Coop's Place on Decatur Street.

I redeemed myself on Thursday morning as I dived head first into the NABJ convention bright
and early in the morning. The opening ceremony began with a Second Line brass band full of
local youth and adult dancers dressed in yellow and black costumes and blackface. Greg Lee,
NABJ president and his board members danced behind the band holding up colorful umbrellas.
The live music invoked the New Orleans celebratory spirit and kicked off the beginning of an
amazing first day at the convention.

During the opening ceremony, NABJ chapters and members were honored. Of course, Howard
University won the award for student NABJ chapter of the year (Go BISON!). The ballroom
was flooded with seasoned professionals from my former supervisor Sheila Brooks, founder,
president and CEO of SRB Communications to BET's own Debra Lee who I sat three rows
in front of me. As I sat in my seat taking notes on my iPad. I could not help but to soak in the
experience. I looked down at my lap to reflect and noticed that I had a huge grease-like stain
on the hem of my brand new Rachel Roy dress. I guess I missed the smeared clear lip gloss
on the back of my iPad case. The girlie girl in me said, rush home and change, but the hustler
in me said, charge it to the game. So, I sat there and thought about how much journalism has
been the air that I breathed for many years. It was an honor to be attending the convention with
thousands of members that shared the same passion as me. I was proud to be who I was--black
and a journalist.

After the awards were giving out, Reverend Al.Sharpton spoke about his involvement in the
Trayvon Martin case. Sharpton (who shed a ton of pounds) dismissed the notion that his
involvement changed the discourse in the case. He said, "People don't call you to hide their
problem. They call you to expose their problem." In my opinion, Sharpton's involvement was the
match that lit the fire in the Trayvon Martin case. I think people tend to forget the "Reverend" in
front of Mr. Sharpton's name. He started off as an activist not a journalist, so does he need to
be objective post his current position as MSNBC Commentator, maybe, but to what extent? It's
an unspoken truth in the black community that when Rev. Al Sharpton is called marches spread
across the nation like wildfire and attention is drawn to the issue at hand.

Following Al Sharpton, Trayvon Martin's somber parents and lawyers sat on a panel and talked
about the importance of black journalists and the coverage of their son in the media. Ben
Crump, Trayvon Martin's family attorney said, "We were begging the media to look at the facts."
Sybrina Fulton, mother of Trayvon Martin said she was disappointed at some of the medias
coverage of her son's death. Tears welled in her as she said, "It wasn't news to me, it was
my life." The room grew silent as she passed the microphone to her lawyer. After Trayvon's
parents and lawyers left the stage, a panel of black journalists who have been following the
case discussed their role in covering a case objectively despite it being so close to home. I
could relate to what the panelists were discussing because I pitched the story to a conservative
national publication that I was interning for at the time. I knew the story would be huge, but
being the only black woman in the newsroom I didn't want to seem too invested in the case,
but I knew Trayvon Martin's story was beyond newsworthy. I pitched it and wrote an op-ed piece about how Trayvon Martin could have been my brother and received a lot of interesting
comments from some readers. Daralene Jones, General Assignment Reporter, WFTV-Orlando
who broke the story in Florida said she received emails from readers throwing racist slurs at her
like they were compliments. After hearing everyone's personal connection to Trayvon Martin's
story I just hoped that Trayvon's family felt the support of black journalists.

After the opening ceremony, I attended a panel discussion on branding yourself and cutting
through the media clutter. The panel featured journalists Natalie McNeal, Personal Finance
Journalist and the woman behind Frugalista.com, the lovely Corynne L. Corbertt (I love her!
), Beauty Editor at Essence, Bomani Jones, Sports Personality, and many more. Although i've
heard it all before about branding yourself as a professional, hearing people who have been
there and done that offer advice about how they made their brand work for themselves never
gets old. They advised the attentive group of budding and seasoned journalists to put more time
into branding ourselves. So, if you have a blog spend as much time and money into perfecting
that blog. They also said to know who your audience is going to be, so if you sell peas, sell peas
to that distinct audience who is gong ho about that green goodness.

I left the panel fired up and hungry, so I headed to Johnny Po'boys. As I walked down the street,
I noticed Trayvon Martin's parents standing outside of Morton's Steakhouse on Canal Street. I
stopped, introduced myself, and extended my condolences to their family. I tried to hold back
the tears as I told them about the piece I wrote concerning their son. I reassured them that there
are good journalists out there and went on my way.

I had a shrimp Po'boy sandwich and the best seafood gumbo from Johnny' Po'boys (i'm still
drooling as I type). My hotel was in the heart of the French Quarter, so finding a place to eat
was a no brainer. After lunch, I changed my stained dressed (Oh, I pray the cleaners can fix
that) and headed back to the Hilton where the convention took place. I attended the Convention
Chairman's reception and hopped right in line to take a photo with Marsha Ambrosius and
Trombone player Jeff Bradshaw (He has played Trombone for Jill Scott and Jay-Z). Yes, you
read right, Ms. Ambrosius was there in the flesh and she was the sweetest person ever. It's
nice to meet artists who are down to earth. She attended the reception to support the With Art
Philadelphia program. The event was open bar, but I kept it strictly professional and sipped on
my virgin Shirley Temple.

My first night at the NABJ convention was beyond a success. I forgot to mention that I handed
out a ton of business cards and exchanged contacts with some big industry names. I'm looking
forward to seeing what the rest of the weekend has in store.

Japan?s Economy Losing Momentum Amid Global, Domestic Pressures

Japan's economy appears to be weakening in the April-June quarter as business conditions deteriorate and exports flatten off, suggesting that the recovery may have lost momentum.

In May, Japan's merchandise trade deficit rose more than what had been expected. According to the Financial Ministry data released earlier this week, the trade deficit increased to 907 billion yen ($11.5 billion) in May from 522 billion yen in April.

Economists expect that the trade deficit will increase further with energy imports continuing to grow as the country remains reliant on imported fossil fuels. Meanwhile, exports are likely to struggle as the global economy remains weak and the yen stays strong.

"Continued growth in imports, in particular of fossil fuels, will be the main factor driving the trade deficit higher. The shutdown of the country's nuclear power plants has left Japan reliant on imported natural gas for energy. The scheduled restart of two of Japan's 54 reactors in July will do little to mitigate power shortages, leaving the country with around 20 percent less electricity generating capacity than last year," David Rea, an economist at Capital Economics, said.

The continuing crisis in Europe, the weakness in the U.S. market and the strengthening of the Japanese yen have hampered the growth of Japan's export-focused companies. With the increasing borrowing costs in Spain and Italy, the debt crisis in Europe has revived, consequently affecting Japan's market sentiments adversely. Investors have withdrawn from risky assets, leading to a stronger yen.

Japan's industrial production declined in April from the previous month, according to the revised data released by the Trade Ministry earlier in June. The revised data reported that industrial output fell 0.2 percent in April, raising concerns about the country's faltering economic growth momentum.

A major worry for Japan is the fact that the country's electronic sector is seriously affected by the strengthening of the yen. Japanese electronics companies are finding that they are no longer able to keep the prices at competitive level in the international market.

Another concern is Japan's unemployment rate, which, according to the data released by internal affairs ministry, rose to 4.6 percent in April from 4.5 percent in March. Employment conditions in Japan do not seem to improve with major companies such as Sony Corp, NEC Corp and Renesas Electronics Corp announcing job cuts as they are attempting to trim expenses.

In May, the sovereign credit status of Japan was cut to A+ from AA by Fitch Ratings. It commented that the downgrades and negative outlooks reflected growing risks for Japan's sovereign credit profile as a result of high and rising public debt ratios.

Kobo eReader Touch Edition packs bags for Japan, books flight for July

Rakuten's $315 million buyout of Kobo will bear some e-reader fruit come July. The e-tailer's CEO and chairman, Hiroshi Mikitani, announced plans to release the Kobo eReader Touch Edition in Japan next month for 10,000 yen (on par with its $130 US sticker price). Timing is key, of course -- murmurs of the Kindle Touch's Japanese debut haven't escaped Mikitani's notice. "As a Japanese company, we cannot lose (to overseas rivals)," he told The Asahi Shimbun. Rakuten hopes to use the e-reader to export Japanese content, and aims to have 50,000 titles available by the end of 2012. Pre-orders kick off on July 2, with more details to come next month.
