Romney's comments on Olympics rally proud Brits

(AP) ? Mitt Romney may be just what the London Olympics needed.

In little more than 24 hours in London, the U.S. presidential candidate has gotten Britons to stop complaining about bumper-to-bumper traffic, cringing about cost overruns and fretting about shoddy security ? and instead start taking pride in their country's long-awaited day in the sun.

From Prime Minister David Cameron to ordinary Londoners rushing to work, Britons recoiled at the visiting American's suggestion that the logistical problems encountered so far were "disconcerting." Many who have themselves been slamming organizers as incompetent, and the massive competition as an expensive fiasco, are suddenly rallying around the flag.

"Mitt the Twit" screamed Friday's headline in The Sun, which just days ago was trumpeting an embarrassing incident in which an official bus carrying the U.S. team from Heathrow airport got lost and spent hours in traffic.

"Who invited party-pooper Romney?" asked the Daily Mail.

"Nowhere Man" declared the more reserved Times of London, a reference to a biting comment by the famously diplomatic Cameron, who implied that Romney lacked the experience to offer advice to one of the world's great capitals since the Olympics he helped organize in Salt Lake City, Utah, took place "in the middle of nowhere."

"We are holding an Olympic Games in one of the busiest, most active, bustling cities anywhere in the world. Of course, it's easier if you hold an Olympic Games in the middle of nowhere," Cameron said.

Colorful London Mayor Boris Johnson also got in on the act, using Romney's criticism as a rallying cry to stoke up a crowd of tens of thousands gathered at Hyde Park on Thursday night: "There's a guy called Mitt Romney who wants to know if we are ready. Are we ready? Yes, we are!"

Romney spent much of Friday trying to dial back his dig, but ended up raising more eyebrows when he referred to looking out of the "back side" of 10 Downing Street to see the beach volleyball stadium and after he let slip that he had met with the head of MI6, Britain's overseas intelligence agency. Briefings with British spy chiefs are usually kept secret.

To the British, "back side" usually refers to the derriere.

Residents learned of Romney's Olympic readiness comments from friends, television and social media. And the fact the Republican presidential candidate tried to make amends seemed to win him little favor.

"What would he know?" asked Londoner Liudmila Troshina, wearing a Team Great Britain jersey and posing for pictures along with her husband in Piccadilly Circus. "I don't really care what people from other countries think about us because I take my information firsthand ? from people who live here."

"No matter what some man said, we are prepared ... to support our country, our city and our sportsmen with everything we have," she added.

Those sentiments are a quick about-face from the weeks of moaning many Britons have engaged in prior to the games, which begin with the opening ceremony Friday night.

For months, the nation has been awash in complaints ? from taxi drivers angry over special traffic lanes for Olympics VIPS, to slack-jawed travelers staring down long lines at immigration, to commuters apoplectic about being asked to rethink their journey to avoid the crush of Olympic tourists, to residents alarmed that surface-to-air missiles have been placed on their roofs to fight terrorism.

Even the heavens have come in for a browbeating, with the Times of London publishing an editorial recently demanding an end to weeks of rain.

"It is a British sport," Labour lawmaker David Winnick told The Associated Press on Friday. "We always complain."

He should know.

One of the iconic images of London's troubles was Winnick's cutting exchange with the head of the G4S security group earlier this month after the company failed to provide enough Olympics workers, forcing the British military to step in.

"It's a humiliating shambles for the country, isn't it?" Winnick demanded of Nick Buckles after the CEO offered a groveling mea culpa on live TV, repeating the charge until Buckles could not deny that it was.

But even Winnick winced when he heard what Romney had to say.

"These are internal matters that would be well dealt with under our own democratic system," he said. "There is a feeling, and I'm sure it applies in the United States, that ... families can quarrel bitterly in private, but should anyone from the outside have a go, the family is united. In other words: 'Mind your own business.'"

The juicy bits: A sneak peek at opening ceremony

LONDON (AP) ? There will be sheep. A cricket game. Nurses. Plus Paul McCartney and possibly James Bond.

Officials want details of the 27 million-pound ($42.3 million) London Olympics opening ceremony to be a secret so that viewers can be surprised, but director Danny Boyle has already disclosed select details: Real farm animals on meadows; plows and maypoles; an idyllic picture of England as the "green and pleasant land;" a dance number featuring nurses and a closing song by McCartney.

Many reports are also suggesting a pre-recorded segment filmed inside Buckingham Palace featuring actor Daniel Craig as Bond, and a stuntman dressed as 007 who will parachute into the stadium to start the show. Later, the pastoral first act will be replaced by a grim scene reenacting a coal-blackened, industrial Britain at the mercy of towering chimney stacks and giant cogs.

How will it all come together?

SWEEPING VISION

The ceremony's mastermind, filmmaker Boyle, has stressed that the 3-hour show will take viewers on a sweeping journey through Britain's history, one that captures the nation's identity, values, heritage, as well as its present and future. In their own ways, each of the elements represents some aspect of Englishness ? though some in quirkier ways than others.

BAAH, BAAH

Seventy sheep are set to star in the ceremony, alongside 12 horses, 10 chickens and three sheep dogs. Britain may no longer be the farm-based economy it used to be, but no less than 50,000 sheep farms still dot the nation's fields ? the largest sheep flock in the 27-nation European Union. But the animals have been chosen for a far more symbolic reason: Shepherds and the pastoral life have long been romanticized by British writers like Edmund Spenser, and at every patriotic event Britons belt out the glories of "England's pleasant pastures" to William Blake's anthem "Jerusalem."

Animal rights activists are none too pleased that farm animals have been roped in to perform, however. The group Viva! has complained that the show "smacks of the Roman gladiatorial arena.

MAYPOLES

Each of Great Britain's four nations ? England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland ? will be represented by a maypole topped with their national flowers. A pagan folk symbol, the maypole is still commonly erected in British villages during May Day celebrations (as well as elsewhere in Europe) to celebrate the return of warmer weather.

"It's an essential part of rural life," said Peter Halfpenney, the "squire" ? or president ? of a Morris dancing group. He was delighted that Boyle chose to feature maypoles but disappointed that Morris dancers ? often ridiculed for their folksy costumes ? don't get to take part.

CRICKET

Is there a sport more English than cricket? Played and followed avidly in Commonwealth countries like New Zealand, South Africa and India, the sport's many technical rules ? and the lack of fast, exciting action ? baffle almost everyone else. Fans love the "gentleman's sport" for the strategy and patience it requires.

NURSES

Boyle has disclosed there will be a dance number of nurses celebrating the National Health Service, the country's universal health program. Not only that: performers were recruited from the NHS. Why? To Britons, nurses are the tough, strong and matronly face of the NHS, a nationally cherished post-war institution.

BOND, JAMES BOND

Fast cars, fast women, Martinis shaken not stirred: The super spy 007 needs little introduction. First introduced by writer Ian Fleming in 1953, the fictional British secret agent is the protagonist in the longest-running film franchise to date, with Craig the latest incarnation in a long line. The Bond character's dress, cars and expensive tastes ooze British sophistication.

GLASTONBURY

Wellies, flooded campgrounds, no showers for days ? the Glastonbury music festival is a summer rite of passage for many Britons. Started by farmer Michael Eavis in 1970 the day after Jimi Hendrix died, it has taken place every year since then in Somerset. Rain, hippies, music and mud ? sounds like a recipe for an open-air Boyle extravaganza.

Give Your Business a Boost With Games in the Workplace

This post originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business.

Games are increasingly popular in our workplaces today ? and I don?t mean those time-wasters we play between meetings. Games used to achieve a business result, such as corporate learning or customer education, have recently entered mainstream conversation, even though they?ve been around for years.

Gamification is defined as using game technology in a website, service, community or application in order to drive participation. It?s a perfect way to create customer engagement or employee participation. Companies big and small are examining the impact of games on their business.

Once you?ve sold senior leadership on gamification, the real work begins. Deciding the best game for an organization and agreeing upon a way to effectively implement it can be a real challenge. Here are stories from a few companies in the gamification space about using games to achieve operational results.

Types of Workplace Games

In thinking about the different kinds of games that companies are using, two really rise above the rest. The first is a virtual environment that simulates the real work atmosphere, and one of the most popular simulations is My Marriott Hotel.

The My Marriott Hotel game is a brand awareness and educational tool that gives people a behind the scenes look at what it takes to run a hotel. Francisca Martinez, VP of global talent acquisition for hospitality company Marriott International, shares how the game works:

?First, players manage a ?virtual? hotel restaurant kitchen. They buy equipment and ingredients on a budget, hire and train employees, and serve guests. Points are earned for happy customers, lost for poor service and ultimately, players are rewarded when their operation turns a profit. Then they are able to move on to other areas of hotel operations.?

The game is not only fun, but also serves a valuable purpose. Martinez says the game was developed to give outsiders a glimpse of the very complex operations that take place at a hotel. ?We learned that they had an immense curiosity for what it would mean to work for a hotel and what simply went on inside, as many may have never stayed at one of our hotels,? Martinez explains. ?So the idea was conceived -? develop a game to create greater awareness of how to actually run a hotel.?

The second game type that companies utilize is one that improves cognitive abilities, such as memory, attention, processing speed, flexibility and problem solving. Lumosity offers over 35 such games both online and on mobile. A few of its offerings include:

  • Word Sort trains flexibility by exercising logical reasoning. Users must figure out a hidden rule and sort words into two piles ? words that follow the rules and words that don?t. The rules might be stylistic, such as the use of uppercase, or thematic, such as names of birds.
  • Speed Match trains information processing. Users must compare each symbol with the one that appeared before it and determine if they match. Users have a limited period of time to get as many comparisons correct as possible and are awarded more points for consecutive correct responses.
  • Raindrops trains problem-solving abilities by exercising math skills. Users must solve the arithmetic equation in the raindrop before it reaches the water. The game is over when three raindrops reach the water.
  • Each game gradually increases in difficulty and adjusts to a user?s skill level, and the program also offers a personalized training and performance tracking system. Erica Perng, senior public relations manager at Lumosity, explains that the company?s position in the gamification world grew out of the intersection of neuroscience and physical exercise: ?Co-founders Mike Scanlon, chief scientific officer, and Kunal Sarkar, CEO, wanted to create something that helped people, so with their combined expertise, they decided to start a brain training game company,? Perng says. ?They realized that there was a natural fit between their two fields -? training bodies and training brains.?

    Selling ?Games? to Senior Leadership

Often the hardest part of introducing games into the workplace isn?t the game itself; it?s selling the idea to senior leadership. Frank Farrall, national leader at Deloitte Digital Australia, says, ?Games are a proven technique to drive and reward specific behaviors and can be applied to customers or staff to motivate them to behave in the desired way, while using positive rewards to reinforce desired behavior.?

The Deloitte Leadership Academy is an interactive online learning portal available anywhere and anytime. The platform also facilitates peer collaboration and face-to-face networking.

?Motivational theory can be applied to rewarding users for leaving helpful comments on a review site, staff for performing a process efficiently or in Deloitte Leadership Academy?s case, consuming more content and participating in its online community of leaders,? Farrall says.

Perng agrees that the benefits of gamifying education can be a big selling point ? it shows they?re not just for fun. ?Many companies offer employees gym memberships to keep their workforce healthy,? Perng says. ?Online brain training programs, such as Lumosity are like a gym for your brain, and they can help keep employees mentally strong and sharp.?

What?s more, studies have found that working memory, which is important in storing memory and making decisions, is correlated with high job performance. According to Harvard psychologist Daniel Higgens, prefrontal cognitive ability correlated with the performance ratings that managers received from their supervisors. The prefrontal cortex supports cognitive functions, such as working memory, executive function, focus and reaction time, which are all abilities that can be trained.?

The ability to connect game results with employee performance is essential, and Martinez suggests the best place to start is with the numbers.

?If you look at Facebook?s IPO filing, they stated worldwide revenue generated from the sale of virtual goods on social networking sites, online worlds and casual games was $9 billion in 2011, and it?s forecasted to increase to $14 billion by 2016. There?s a lot of opportunity when it comes to social gaming ? but the space is also crowded, so you have to look at the landscape and be strategic about your entry if you?re going to do it.?

    Implementation Challenges

Even the best programs run into challenges along the way. Farrall says any resistance Deloitte has received to the Leadership Academy?s introduction of gamification has come in the form of people viewing games as child?s play rather than relating to a training environment.

He adds the reverse has also been true: Because participants enjoy games, making sure not to overdo it is also a struggle. ?It has been challenging to find a good balance between making the Leadership Academy competitive through gamification but still keeping users focused on completing training content and applying their development while on the job,? Farrall says.

Bob Marsh is SVP and general manager at ePrize, a company that brings an incentive or game layer to any B2C, B2B or B2E organization. For example, among a sales team, ePrize creates games to learn and motivate sales activities such as client calls, booking client meetings, pitching new products and winning more business. Marsh has developed three rules for a smooth implementation:

    • Keep it simple: A complicated game structure is one more barrier to your end-goal, so a simplified experience is key. If you have too many things going on, people get confused and don?t change behavior.
    • Keep people updated: Let your team members see where they stand, and keep the game top of mind with real-time results.
    • Keep it competitive: Don?t focus so much on the prize. The incentive itself is not the most important thing. Having a leaderboard drives competition, and therefore, more of the activity you?re trying to encourage.

    Participant Response and Business Results

The bottom-line is that for companies to implement games, participants have to like them, and they must result in a positive business outcome. Martinez says the response to My Marriott Hotel has been phenomenal. ?At any given time, we have players from 120 different countries running their own kitchens ? and that?s compared to the 73 countries we actually operate in. We also know that one-third of our game players end up clicking on the ?try it for real? button, which pops them out onto the careers section of our website.?

Perng indicate that in peer-reviewed research, Lumosity users experienced a greater than 10% improvement in working memory and a greater than 20% improvement in attention span after just 10 hours of training. ?We currently hold the world?s largest database of human cognition, with more than 320 million data points. Lumosity?s research and development team continually analyzes this data to optimize Lumosity and the training experience and learn more about the brain health and performance.?

Whether it?s brand awareness, recruitment or high performance, companies are using gamification in varied forms to accomplish their business goals. Being able to study the best practices of others can help businesses determine the approach that will yield them the best results.

Media Distracting Home Buyers | F I N R A G

The media can have a severe impact on a variety of cultural, business and personal trends. Each and every day we turn to media reports to see how the stock market is turning, home prices rising or falling, gas price fluctuations, and personal buying trends. Due to the fact that information is potentially delayed, consumers don?t have the most current information to increase, or decrease, their buying habits.

Sellers vs. Buyers

Sellers are willing to put their homes on the market. The problem is, the media is still reporting that buyers should wait for a better deal in many areas. The recent home price downtrend gave buyers the power to have control in home transactions, but that has all changed in the past year. It is now a market driven once again by sellers, and buyers are discouraged by media reports. Sellers are encouraged to walk around their homes, inside and out, and find its appeal to a potential buyer. Buyers are told to hold out, waiting for a better deal, but the reality of the situation is that a home will be sold to someone else if a buyer does not act quickly.

Homes in Orlando

Orlando real estate news attempts to keep abreast of buying trends in Central Florida. Once a stagnant market, home sales are on the rise and so are housing prices. Home buyers are distracted from Orlando real estate news reports as the information is not cutting edge and doesn?t portray the market as it strengthens on a frequent basis. In truth, the real estate market bottomed out in January 2011 and has been steadily increasing ever since. Buyers are shocked at the difficulties they incur in buying a home and the competition they now face.

Development and Purchasing

Back in 2011, housing in Orlando real estate news suffered a downtrend. The four-county region boasted nearly 1,000 new homes by the end of the second quarter of the year. The inventory of resale homes was reported to decline, but the amount of single-family homes was 21 percent smaller than what was available one year prior, showing an increase overall. Even though media reports were swayed toward a still declining market, the fact that not as many houses were available in 2011 as in 2010 showed that people were managing to either retain their homes during a tough market, or simply waiting for home values to increase prior to selling.

Commercial Real Estate

Locally, Orlando real estate news reports a purchasing trend in commercial real estate opportunities. Distressed properties just waiting for new owners are at an all-time high. Even though pricing isn?t as low as several months ago, new entrepreneurs still have an excellent chance at a bargain in the Orlando area. Commercial development is encouraged as the area grows and develops. Orlando real estate news consistently reports new developmental projects, including retail space, city facilities and recreational space.

Yes, Orlando real estate news is consistently telling readers to get out there, research potential properties, and make an offer. Even though information is slightly delayed in current relevance, it is still a time to once again encourage growth and development in the real estate market. Contact local real estate agents that are on hand to assist with all your real estate questions and requirements.

Google unveils ultrafast Internet/TV in Kansas City

Google Inc made its foray into the market for bundled Internet and television services on Thursday, promising access speeds more than 100 times faster than those of traditional U.S. cable and telecommunications companies.

The Web search leader unveiled its ultra-high speed Google Fiber service in Kansas City, Missouri, and could start installations in September, executives said. Google hopes to roll out the service to other cities later.

"Access is the next frontier that needs to be opened," Google Chief Financial Officer Patrick Pichette said. "We're going to do it profitably. That is our plan."

"We are at a crossroad," he added, noting that Internet speeds had leveled out for broadband since around 2000. "We at Google we believe there is no need to wait."

Google Fiber's ultra high-speed connections and television offerings are aimed at surpassing those of current providers, allowing users to search live channels, Netflix, YouTube, recorded shows and tens of thousands of hours of on-demand programming. However, no phone service is available.

"The phone is really a 1940s thing. Why have a landline? It's sitting there, you use it once every two weeks," Pichette said.

Google said it also intends to roll out product packages for businesses, but would not provide details.

Google Fiber includes more than 100 networks and costs $120 a month for a package of TV, 1 gigabyte per second Internet speeds and 1 terabyte of cloud storage.

The package includes popular networks owned by major media companies such as Comcast Corp's NBC Universal, Discovery Communications and Viacom Inc. Premium movie networks are available from Liberty Media's Starz for an extra fee.

But it excludes several major TV names, such as News Corp's Fox cable channels; Time Warner networks like CNN, TNT and TBS, as well as Walt Disney Co cable channels like ESPN and Disney children networks.

Google executives said the company is still in negotiations to add more content.

"They need to be able to offer something that is everything people have now and more," said Ben Schachter, an analyst with Macquarie Research.

"People are going to have high expectations for this. The worst thing they can do is come out and disappoint."

Google is also offering an Internet-only package priced at $70 a month. The download speeds would be around 1 gigabyte a second, according to Google executives.

Google is charging a $300 installation fee, saying consumers should treat it as a "home improvement" cost.

The initial service area includes central Kansas City, Missouri and all of the city of neighboring Kansas City, Kansas.

This market is dominated by Time Warner Cable Inc, which charges $99.95 for its fastest Internet-only service there. Google Fiber would be 20 times faster.

Time Warner spokesman Justin Venech said the second largest U.S. cable operator had a "robust and adaptable network" and welcomed the competition.

Features and freebee
Google Fiber includes such features as the ability to record eight TV shows at a time and store up to 500 hours of high definition programming. Users can choose to use a tablet or smartphone as a voice-activated remote control.

Google is offering its Nexus 7 tablet with the Google TV app to early users of the service.

Google said it is setting up a 6-week "rally" for consumers to vote on where the first fiber communities, or "fiberhoods," should be installed in the Kansas City area.

Consumers must pay $10 to register their household online for service. About 50 "neighbors" will need to register in order for their area to be eligible for installation services, according to Google executives.

Whether or not consumers will embrace the new offerings remains to be seen. But officials said they are confident Kansas City will be a showcase of success for a larger rollout.

"Google is a very different company," said Kevin Lo, general manager of Google Access. "And this is not a short-term project."

HBT: Red Sox send Lillibridge to Indians

Brent Lillibridge is on the move again.

Traded from the White Sox to the Red Sox in the Kevin Youkilis deal and then almost immediately designated for assignment by Boston, Lillibridge has now been dealt to the Indians for minor leaguer Jose De La Torre.

He?s expected to join the Indians? active roster and will serve in his usual utility man role. De La Torre is a 26-year-old Double-A middle reliever, so this is pretty close to a giveaway deal.

Lillibridge had an out of nowhere power surge for the White Sox last season, but he?s a 28-year-old career .212 hitter with a .630 OPS in 295 games overall.

How To Market Business Online | free world message

The internet is the fastest growing market in the world. There are over 2.4 million internet users in Ireland.?

With only 4.1 million people, that's over the half the population in your geographic area who could potential be reached through Internet Marketing. Just because you have a store front business doesn't mean you can afford to ignore this vast marketing potential. It is estimated more people use the internet to look for goods and services than use the phone book now. The web is going to continue to grow as a resource, particularly since internet capable phones are becoming more and more popular. A local business may rely on local customers. However, with the explosion of online products and services more and more people are turning to the internet to look for products and services. All of the major search engines include a business locator option. This means users can use the search engine to find all the business in their area which might sell the goods or services they are looking for. Then, with the click of a button they can see if that business is in their area and even locate the business on a map (with directions to it).

This service by the search engines has nothing to do with your website and everything to do with how your site is utilising Internet Marketing techniques. If the search engines do not know your business exists, they can't very well point customers to your location. Another aspect to Internet Marketing or SEO is how well you are placed on the search engines, how high your site is listed when people are searching for business of a similar sort. If your website does not place well with the various search engines, potential customers will be looking at other businesses first.?

Make sure your website is properly marketed and optimised to rank high on the major search engines. It isn't enough to just have a website. You have to market your website on the internet effectively. Using effective Internet Marketing can help even local business attract new customers. But in order to be effective you need to be savvy about how the internet works and how to get the best results from the major search engine searches. Internet users are potential customers, but only if your marketing to them.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How to market your online business?
Do anyone have any successful ideas on how to market, advertise you online business. Its a website that allows others to advertise thier local business, online business, how to manage, budget, and make money online, with most of the online business to make money from are free? Please give me successful ideas, ones that have worked for people you know or yourself.
    • ANSWER:
Online businesses need quality on-topic content that acts as a magnet to draw qualified prospects. In addition, you need to spread the word online by providing quality expert information on user conversation sites (e.g. Y! Answers) that include links back to your site if your site offers services that may benefit the people you're responding to.
Be sure you are 'pinging' the search engines so they know to come crawl your site.
If you have a newsworthy announcement you should consider the opportunities available by using online press releases. There are free places to do this but it's reported that the value available from the company I work at (PRWeb) is worth the spend (starts at ).
  2. QUESTION:
How should I market my small business online?
My husband and I just started a small retail business and are interested in marketing it online. Any suggestions as to the best way to start?
    • ANSWER:
As an online store, you need to focus on two things:
      - get TARGETED traffic interested in what you sell (avoid traffic exchanges, traffic swarm and those poor quality traffic)
      - CONVERT those visitors into buyers
You can use pay per click advertising in the search engines to reach audiences looking for your products. You can use Google Adwords http://www.google.com/adwords or Yahoo http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com
Here are some shoestring marketing ideas that can help you get the visitors you need at the least cost possible:
      1. Create the best content you can with the best products you can possibly offer. Your content is your best advertisement - if visitors love your content, then they will go back and spread the word to others.
      2. Make it easy for users to recommend your site. Viral marketing is very important -- and easy to tap on the Web. But give your users the tools. Get a Recommend this Site script from websites such as cgiscripts.com and similar directories of scripts. Some even go as far as giving incentives to those who recommend the site to their friends. If only 10 people go to your site, but these 10 people invite 10 more - that's additional traffic that you get for FREE!
      Recommend Site Scripts (various) http://php.resourceindex.com/Complete_Scripts/Website_Promotion/Recommend_Site/
Big Nose Bird Recommend this Site http://bignosebird.com/carchive/birdcast.shtml
      CGI Resource Index http://cgi.resourceindex.com/Programs_and_Scripts/Perl/Website_Promotion/Recommend_Site/
      Hostscripts http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Scripts_and_Programs/Site_Recommendation/index.html
      3. Rank well in the search engines (organic search results, not the pay per click). SEs can be a big source of traffic. The key is to create the best content in your niche. If you have good content, other websites will gladly link to you and offer your site as a resource to their audience. Check the on-page factors and be sure to get linked from authority sites in your topic area.
If you are going to read only one piece on search engine optimization, I suggest you read Brett Tabke of WebmasterWorld.com's "Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone: 26 steps to 15k a day." http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum3/2010.htm
      4. Send out press releases. While outfits charge as much as 0 per release, there are free press release submission places on the Web. Press releases allow you to (a) attract media attention; (b) get more back links to your website without sending each website an email request; and (c) get more visibility especially if your press release gets in Google News or Yahoo News.

      5. Submit articles. Write articles and submit them to websites accepting author submissions. You get exposure for your business; establishes you as an authority in your field, and allows you to get backlinks for your website. If 50 websites publish your article and it contains a link back to your website, then you easily get 50 links from a single article. The more links you have, the greater your chances for increasing your search engine rankings.

Read the article " How To Sell More on the Web: 30 Tips To Increase Conversion Rates For An Ecommerce Site " http://www.powerhomebiz.com/092006/ecommerce.htm for tips on how to improve your conversion rates.
      7. Post a link to your site for free where it is allowed (always read the Terms of Use). Examples are:

      Google Base http://base.google.com

  6. QUESTION:
What is the best way to market your business online?
I am working with a team to optimize me on google maps and I am going to be on yellowbook but I want to make sure I am spending my money wisely. And I don't understand fully how to optimize my web page either. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
    • ANSWER:
The most effective way to advertise on the Internet is
to first set up a website and publish its domain name
on major search directories such as Google.com,
      Yahoo.com [at http://www.google.com/addurl/?...... and
MSN.com since 85% of Internet shoppers rely on these
search directories to provide them with goods and
services. In a sense, these search directories are a
      very large Internet Yellow Pages.
Nevertheless, should your website or opening webpage
fail to contain "generic" keywords, then anyone using
such "generic" queries will not be able to discover
your website. Your domain name [URL] of your website,
in a sense, will be invisible, undiscoverable.
You may want to consider some simple algorithms which,
when observed and committed in designing of a website
with placement of various critical metatags that can
surely achieve a high search engine presence and
increase Internet traffic to your website. These
metatag strategies work well with published webpages
      at Google and Yahoo.
Design: Should you create an extensive Flash-based
website, make sure to fill-in the property entries
such as the Title, Description and Keywords. Failing
to do so, leaves no hard HTML or ALT resource that can
be readily indexed by search robots. Also consider the
Internet audience and their incoming setup. For
example, if they are on analog/dialup, Flash webpages
take too long to load up and therefore analog users
will likely lose interest and discontinue entering the
Flash site. On the other hand, anyone on hi-speed DSL
lines, will welcome Flash pages which load quickly. So
before designing a pure Flash websitge, ask the simple
question, "Who's my end user - is he on dialup or
DSL?" And if you had to choose between these two users
for maximum marketability, then select analog users
since 80% of most resident users are still analog
Internet subscribers and pure HTML designed webpages
      is best for them.
A non-Flash-based website which relies on hard text,
is far easier to be indexed by search robots. Limit
the use of stylized text saved as .gifs since as a
graphic, they are not indexable by search robots.
Avoid use of frames since any number of search robots
are unable to properly classify textual material.
      Placement of Metatags:
A ranking or search order does take place with Google
and Yahoo and it begins with the "Title" metag which
should consist of no more than 65 characters separated
by commas. The "Title" should describe in generic
terms, the goods and services, followed by a location
from which the resource is located, i.e., city, state.
The placement of a domain name which is not generic
within the "Title" is not appropriate, unless your
domain name is a major recognizable brand name.
The second metatag is the "Description" which is
usually 25-30 words to form a complete sentence which
best describes one's goods and services.
And the very last category - "Keywords" are also
somewhat limited to 15-16 words which can be plural
and compound in nature. Again, avoid multiple entries
which could be mistaken as "spamdexed entries" which
is defined as the loading, and submission of
repetitive words into a particular metatag category.
"Spamdexing" when discovered on a webpage and reported
to Google's spamreport.com can result in the
elimination of your website from their search
      directory.
      Good luck!

Is there a way to market my business online, other than posting free ads?
A lot of the free classifieds places to post, put my ad on the last page of their site, because it's not a premium (paid) ad. Are there places for people who are just starting a business, to advertise, without having to pay? just a note, i am pretty much computer illiterate......i have only had my computer sence December '06, and only know how to do a very limited amount of things with it. Also, it is a second hand one from family....the hard drive is so loaded, i am unable to down load anything, and all the filters and such on here, won't let me open much of the attachments to e-mails.
What i do for a living, is share information on how to live longer healthier lives, by getting the toxins out of our homes. Also, i used to have 13 perscriptions on my desk, that i had to take 2 times a day. With the wellness product vitamins, and supplements, i am down to 7, and am working with my doctor, to wean myself off perscription meds. and use company products. My allergies, and asthma are undercontrol now that the toxic cleaning products, and bath/shower products are out of my home. Sence i have had such excellent results with the products that i purchase, i decided to make this my business. It is a consumer direct company, meaning that there is no inventory to buy and sell, no collecting money, no paperwork at the end of the month.........none of the headache of a home business....i just need help to find the best places to market my business. Just starting, i don't have a huge advertising budget, but still i want to share this with as many others a i can.
    • ANSWER:
You may want to consider a link partnership.
If you can think of someone that your clients would be interested in getting information on , you would provide a link to their site in return they would provide a link to your site.
Also, you may need to change or add what is called meta tags. You can get information on this on-line for free.
The following site my be useful: http://www.submitexpress.com/metatag.html
The more traffic you have to your site will move you up in the listings. However, many search sites reserve the top 10 listings for paying customers. Paying for this service rarely is worth the cost.
You may want to offer something Free, it will drive traffic to your site and increase you listing. It does not have to be a material object. Advise or information for example.
      Best of luck.

  12. QUESTION:
How can I market my small business online?
I have just started a small business and I would like to know how I can spread my marketing onto the internet. I learned that it would cost me a lot of money to do this. How can I go about this?
    • ANSWER:
      1. Get started with an effective website.
      2. Search target audience online and their favorite communities: For example blogs, forums, social networks etc. Participate on these platforms.
      3. Post blogs, write articles and press releases.
      4. List your website in relevant directories.
  13. QUESTION:
Are there any free resources where I can I learn how to market my small business online?
I am interested in learning how to implement various internet marketing strategies to help grow my business but have a limited budget and not enough time to sift through all the junk to find what really works. Does anyone now of a website that has comprehensive quality content and that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?
    • ANSWER:
It just so happens that I found a website catering specifically to the marketing needs of small business owners like ourselves. Having spent countless hours researching online for educational resources and internet marketing techniques that I could implement myself, I was delighted to have stumbled upon this website.
I was reluctant to watch the video that you have to watch before signing up, but I am very glad I did. I believe that they have an agreement with other internet marketing experts to host their content. So basically, it is a hub of all kinds of programs and courses, very well organized and easy to navigate, that you would normally have to pay for individually.
Also, I was hesitant about the monthly membership fee, but because of their affiliate program, I am already making more money every month in residual commissions than what the membership fee is. To tell you the truth, I am more excited about the commissions I am making then actually implementing the strategies I am learning for my business. I ran some numbers and I figure I can make far more money in commissions than I can in my current business.
Actually, now that I think about it, they also teach a way to hire a five person full time marketing team comprised of foreign employees that you hire, manage, and pay via the internet for a fraction of what it would cost you normally. They have access to the membership site so that they can learn and implement the strategies. And with the residual commissions that you can make, even this becomes free.
So, by referring people to the site, you can not only have five full time employees dedicated to marketing your small business on the internet, but you can actually make much more money than what your salaries and membership costs are.

    Would love some more ideas!
    • ANSWER:
One really good way is to advertise on the rear window of your vehicle. I did that for my decal business a while back and I got more than 30 visits the first day just for driving around my neighborhood. It's probably the easiest too since you don't have to worry about paying for advertisements to be posted. To add to that, also making your website address simple & easy to remember will ensure you that more people will visit your site after they see it posted on your vehicle.

Semi-retired Man Looking to Start a small Online Business?
Semi-Retired man looking for a small online marketing business to supplement current income would like help and advice to how this can be actioned please.
    • ANSWER:
Well its a rather open ended question but I'll give it a go. If you wish to start a small online business you need to have a few things in place first.
      1. An understanding of how marketing online works, its a very different set of rules compared to offline marketing. Though both share a common goal and many similar techniques an online marketer has to take into consideration a few more factors i.e. search engines, keywords....
      2. What do you plan to 'market' - Information products are a great way to earn money, especially if you already have 'more knowledge' than your target customers, and there are in fact customers to target.
3.Don't buy into some ones 'business in a bow' style systems until you know what you are doing. To often people see a pre-made business and think the work is done for them. The truth is without the right knowledge on what to do with said business you will get nothing in return.
4.Affiliate Marketing is a great way to get started as this removes the requirement to create a sell able product. This doesn't mean its easier it just has one less step to learn.
Don;t spend any money on this until you have a clear idea of your plans. Knowledge is key to making a online business work (same with any business really). To many people (myself included) started out the wrong way and waisted time effort and money on systems far beyond there ability at the time.

How to start an online dating site, or a profitable online business and be successful?
I'm interested in starting an online business that works. I would consider a dating site, casino site, or other websites that work. I would like to know how I can get stated. I have lots of online experiance. I have looked at many different companies that provide online dating, and casino sites built and read to run. How legit are they, and are their claims for success accurate? They average in price from 9-,000. I don't have a lot of money especially to throw away in a scam. What are my best options. I've done ebay, and a few of the online marketing scams that don't work. I'm billingual, English and Spanish, have a two year general degree working on my B.a in business management. I'm receptive to working with other people on a new idea that we can market online, have a few ideas myself just don't know how to get started, can someone lead me in the right direction?
    • ANSWER:
Starting an online business is not at all a great deal!!! However making it profitable is the real challenge for any online marketer. If you want to make money online, that's great, but you need a system. You need to follow the strategies which are aleready tried n tested & are used by the champions who could make their fortune on the internet. Don't re-invent the wheel - don't make the mistake of wasting time and money in developing a product.Because you know nothing (I believe so) at the moment about internet marketing. So you must work with someone who can prove their system - be cautious and careful. You need to crawl first before you can walk or run - the best way to learn is to become an Affiliate Marketer. The main advantage with affiliate marketing is that -suppose the product you are promoting is not selling well due to some reason, you can drop that product & chose something else to sell.In short as an affiliate you are essentially a free-lance marketer - not bound by long-term contracts having a freedom to review / revise / remould your plans as per the demand in the market . (To see the changing demand in the market have a look at these http://buzzyahoo.notlong.com &
      http://buzz-google.notlong.com )
There are lots of people out there there -- people just like you -- who are enjoying the financial freedom that comes with successful affiliate marketing.

Small Business Marketing Strategy: Target the up-and-coming search engines
While Google still rules the roost when it comes to Internet search engines, and Yahoo is firmly entrenched in second spot, a number of new start-ups are hoping to give them a run for their money. And a good small business marketing strategy would be to check them out and see how you can make them work for your site!
Some of the new up-and-comers include:
Powerset : A "natural language" search engine
      Hakia : A "meaning-based" search engine
      Wikia : A "community-based" search engine
      ChaCha : A "social networking-based" search engine
Snap : A search engine that offers visual previews
It's a smart small business marketing strategy to continue optimizing for the Google, Yahoo, and MSN search engines as they are by far and away the most popular -- but niche search engines could provide new opportunities to reach your market. Be sure to check them out!

How do I advertise my business online?
I'm a small business owner and don't have thousands of dollars a month for SEO or online marketing. What is the best way to advertise my business online without breaking the bank? Is there a service or company that can help me with local business listings?
    Thanks
    Reid
    • ANSWER:
Google Local Business Listing is very easy to do.
If you can run your business, you can do a business listing, most of the details required are business name, contact information, website address and a 200 character description. Include some of you product or service keywords in the description.
When you submit, you will be asked to verify the listing information, with choice of telephone call or by post.
      Telephone call is the fastest.
When the telephone call comes through, there will be an automated message with a 5 digit PIN number. You enter this into the box on the Google Local business centre, then click verify.
NOTE: You will need to register for a googlemail account then submit your website / business details to Google's local business centre.
      http://www.google.com/local/add
Additional Marketing for your Website using Directories and Website Links
The next step is to get links to your website. This is one of the most important things that you can do to help your website with regard to internet marketing and search engine results. To do this you will need to list your website on as many websites and directories as possible.
      Directories
Paid Listing Directory: for a listing fee your website is listed, often these are higher quality directories as only serious website owners and business's will pay to be listed. These are usually the fastest way to get listed and get links to your website, as the paid listing directories are run as a business. There are niche/specialist and general directories.
Free Directories: it can take a long time to get your website listed. As the service is free, there may be little or no control of the quality of websites being listed. DMOZ is the most important free directory, it can take quite some time to get listed, but worth the effort, follow submission guidelines very carefully.
      http://www.dmoz.org
Show Me Another: this is a new 'Search Directory' that allows registered users to submit websites and in return for contributing you get a link to your own website for every website submitted. Its a free service and websites are added instantly.

The best answer will be compensated well if you contact me at surbhi1979@yahoo.com
    • ANSWER:
You need to start with the two most basic things:
      1. A website. You can hire a firm to do this for you but it will be expensive (4 figures). Or you can find a self-service where you can build one on your own. For example, Yahoo Sitebuilder (yes I know this is Yahoo Answers but Sitebuilder is the one I've used in the past). Also, Wordpress might work. Search for "website design", I just did and came up with hundreds of companies that could help you. If you decide to hire a company, make sure to get multiple bids and compare them. Tell them you probably want an HTML rather than a Flash site.
      2. Search engine marketers. Search engine results are the lowest hanging fruit for generating leads and interest in your company/product. Search online for "SEM firms" or Search Engine Marketing.
My credentials: almost a decade of online marketing.

  36. QUESTION:
Where can I find tips for online marketing strategies?
Books, magazines, websites or any other source that can help me learn how to effectively market my business online.
    • ANSWER:
The most effective way to advertise on the Internet is to first set up a website and publish its domain name on major search directories such as Google.com, Yahoo.com [at http://www.google.com/addurl/?... and MSN.com since 85% of Internet shoppers rely on these search directories to provide them with goods and services. In a sense, these search directories are a very large Internet Yellow Pages.
Nevertheless, should your website or opening webpage fail to contain "generic" keywords, then anyone using such "generic" queries will not be able to discover your website. Your domain name [URL] of your website, in a sense, will be invisible, undiscoverable.
You may want to consider some simple algorithms which, when observed and committed in designing of a website with placement of various critical metatags that can surely achieve a high search engine presence and increase Internet traffic to your website. These metatag strategies work well with published webpages at Google and Yahoo.
Design: Should you create an extensive Flash-based website, make sure to fill-in the property entries such as the Title, Description and Keywords. Failing to do so, leaves no hard HTML or ALT resource that can be readily indexed by search robots. Also consider the Internet audience and their incoming setup. For example, if they are on analog/dialup, Flash webpages take too long to load up and therefore analog users will likely lose interest and discontinue entering the Flash site. On the other hand, anyone on hi-speed DSL lines, will welcome Flash pages which load quickly. So before designing a pure Flash websitge, ask the simple question, "Who's my end user - is he on dialup or DSL?" And if you had to choose between these two users for maximum marketability, then select analog users since 80% of most resident users are still analog Internet subscribers and pure HTML designed webpages is best for them.
A non-Flash-based website which relies on hard text, is far easier to be indexed by search robots. Limit the use of stylized text saved as .gifs since as a graphic, they are not indexable by search robots.
Avoid use of frames since any number of search robots are unable to properly classify textual material.
      Placement of Metatags:
A ranking or search order does take place with Google and Yahoo and it begins with the "Title" metag which should consist of no more than 65 characters separated by commas. The "Title" should describe in generic terms, the goods and services, followed by a location from which the resource is located, i.e., city, state. The placement of a domain name which is not generic within the "Title" is not appropriate, unless your domain name is a major recognizable brand name.
The second metatag is the "Description" which is usually 25-30 words to form a complete sentence which best describes one's goods and services.
And the very last category - "Keywords" are also somewhat limited to 15-16 words which can be plural and compound in nature. Again, avoid multiple entries which could be mistaken as "spamdexed entries" which is defined as the loading, and submission of repetitive words into a particular metatag category. "Spamdexing" when discovered on a webpage and reported to Google's spamreport.com can result in the elimination of your website from their search directory.
Here's an example of a very highly-placed website on Yahoo.com: Begin with the search query "pizza downtown los angeles." It will bring up some 1.4 million+ websites as results. Check out where "Pizza Next Door" is ranked. It's in the Top Five! Again, Pizza Next Door's high web presence was achieved by proper web design and placement of relevant metatags according to Yahoo's publication guidelines.
      Good luck!
  37. QUESTION:
How hard is it to come up w/ our own website for a small online business to market our own hand-made products?
    • ANSWER:
Look into a content management system (CMS) such as http://radiantcms.org/ or http://www.joomla.org/
If that looks too complicated still, you can always just design each page by hand and link them together. This isn't difficult, just spend a little bit of time learning HTML at http://w3schools.com/html/default.asp it would also be good to style your HTML using CSS http://w3schools.com/css/default.asp This is simpler than a CMS, but it is also more difficult to maintain.
If this still seems difficult, you can look into some of the applications designed to generate webpages, I haven't looked at these in a really long time, but try, http://tryit.adobe.com/us/cs4/dreamweaver/ These kinds will be the most brittle, though, because you can't style them, and you can't manually fix any screwups they make when generating the code.
