Periodic Table Table: Furniture Gone Geek

There's antimony, arsenic, aluminum, selenium, and hydrogen and oxygen and nitrogen and rhenium. All of the items from the classic Tom Lehrer tune are here in this Theodore Gray creation that unites two of Pop Mech's passions: chemistry and DIY.

Gray, a co-founder of Wolfram Research, has long kept up one of the best sites on the Web for elemental knowledge and trivia. Recently, the American Chemical Society put out a delightful video, seen here, of Gray explaining the Periodic Table Table. This wonderfully named creation is exactly what it claims to be: a coffee table housing samples of the chemical elements.

The table grid is laid out in the familiar periodic table format you'd recognize from the poster that hung in your high school chemistry class. But pick up one of the squares and you'll find the element itself lurking underneath: a vial of mercury, a vial of yellowish chlorine, or a small cylinder of tungsten that weighs 11 pounds and takes all of Gray's finger strength to pick up.
